Gearbox compatibility

Recommended Posts

Hi, need some help. My gearbox in my mk2 170 estate is making godawful rumbling noises in 4th and 6th, been advised it's bearings etc and cheapest option is a 2nd hand box. Trouble is codes and compatibility. The service book says the code is kzx.

My question to those in the know is, if I get a gearbox from another vag engine, will it fit mine? Same mounts etc? Tia

There is no KZX gearbox on the Superb, there is however a KXZ. All manual gearboxes used on the Superb 2 are type 02Q, so it is possible any gearbox of that type could fit the bellhousing and mounts,. But it's not that simple once you start looking at internal construction. Each engine gets a unique set of gear ratios and final drive ratios, plus separate assignment for 4x4 versions where they exist. Up to the model year of your car only two gearbox codes are assigned to the 170 TDI, the KXZ you have and the earlier KNY. Both have the same gear ratios and final drive ratios and should be interchangeable. I don't have a later revision of the gearbox service manual handy, so I can't say if there are later 'boxes with the same gearset. I think I have them downloaded on another PC - I'll check later.

Thanks so much for the informative and quick reply chimaera. Although it's left me a wee bit disheartened! You're right about the code though, muddled it up..

So basically I need to find a specific superb mk2 170bhp box, with either of the 2 codes you mentioned. Bugger!

The quest begins..

Why not get it sorted by a gearbox specialist?  I used one for mrs BJ's Panda when it started making awful noises. Now sounds/ feels better than it was new!  In our case we used Wallis Auto Engineering Hull.

What kind of money are you talking, BigJohn??

Gearbox rebuild was around £600 all in inc labour/fitting - However the Panda has a smaller gearbox and doesn't have a DMF  but cost inc  new clutch and I insisted on replacement of everything "inside" the bellhousing inc the funny lever release fork Fiat uses

Thanks for that. It actually seems quite reasonable considering a scrap box is 250- 7/800! (They average around 400 inc vat and delivery) Also, the quotes I've had so far I haven't checked the compatibility, as per chimaera's post previously, so they could be 'any old vag'! (rude joke in there somewhere...🤣

I'll give that place you found (thanks for that) a wee call and get a rough idea. Cheers
