Updating Map f/ware

Featured Replies

Skoda site advises new update ..... doenloaded and the zip file is 28GB

Pretty amzing file size ... my first desk top business PC had 30MB HDD and that was OS, Microsoft office and all my own documents.

Anyway ... I have a 30GB memory stick but the file won't fit.

Anybody know if you can use a USB SSD drive ..... I have 1 TB  one of those ..... formatted as NTFS.

Otherwise I'm stuck.

The latest update downloaded and unzipped to my 32gb SD card with no problems. Did you format to fat 32?

I was trying to a 32GB USB stick

I'll have to try and borrow a large enough SD card

For some reason I thought you updated with a USB stick

My 2018 Kodiaq has now been replaced with a Kamiq,  but when I updated my maps in the Kodiaq I always did it with a memory stick.

Yesterday I tried updating my Kamiq using a 32gb memory stick which was empty and formatted, but the Skoda portal stated that there wasn't enough memory on my stick to accommodate the download.

I use a 64gb stick instead which was fine. Go Figure !

This is the issue I have

The file may be only 29gb but with overhead it will not fit on 32gb memory stick

Managed to borrow a 64GB card

Added issue ... FAT32 does not support greater than 32GB so cannot format to use FAT32 ...... so currently stuck

Don't understand that, my SanDisk 64gb formatted fine and I was able to load the mapping onto it.

NTFS works just fine, no need for specificly FAT32.

W10  does not support formatting to greater than 32gb ..... as soon as you put in an SD card or USB stick that is greater than 32gb  Windows removes option to use FAT32

Yes you can go to 3rd party Apps .... but I do not like the idea of formatting a file structure that W10 does not support.

Windows only gives you NTFS or exFAT    ..... I'll try exFAT first as its already formatted for that

OK ... update for anyone else interested.

Skoda map update WEBpage is WRONG

Skoda Columbus update instructions document is WRONG

The download file is now too large to fit on a 32GB SD card

Skoda states to format SD card with FAT32 using Windows OS ..... you can't format FAT32 on larger SD cards using Windows OS as W10 does not support greater than 32GB.

(you can use 3rd party apps but that is not what Skoda advises)

Fact .... you can use greater than 32GB SD cards ..... I used a 64GB card formatted to exFAT

I just carried out the latest update so can attest that this works.

I’ve tried updating using an SD card but went back to the following method.

If you download via the SIM (online) it’s an incremental update so only need to download I think about 2GB.

I just take out the free 3 200MB Sim out and put in the SIM card out of my phone which has plenty of free download on its plan.

When done put the 3 sim back in.

Strange, as I mentioned in my previous post the ECE 2021/2022 update from the Skoda portal worked perfectly on my 32gb SD card same as all other previous updates.

The latest infotainment systems in the Kodiaq do not have SD or SIM card slots.

When I went to the download site ... entered my VIN  ..... it did not give me any options of different files ...... so no 2MB update .... just the HUGE 29GB one.

You can't fit that on a 32GB FAT32 card.

Anyway for me update is now done and my Kodiaq has 2 x SD card slots so I used SD1

I did ask my dealer, they will not update Maps as it takes too long.

I assume by exFAT , you are referring to NTFS. How long did the 29GB take to get into the Colombus system?

I have try with a USB cause I do not have such high capacity SD cards. Got microSD cards though, will have to look for an adapter to go into the car 😟

No ... exFAT is one file format and and NTFS is another

I am refering to exFAT  which is a file sytems specifially optimized for Memory Sticks

While NTFS is widely used on HDD  on memory sticks exFAT is more widepsead.

Repeat, NTFS works just fine. USB stick is also ok.

Just make sure you copy 3 extracted files (MIB I, MIB II and metadata) directly to root folder, not the folder, which contains these files.

Old USB stick took about 40 minutes to complete update, new SSD stick does it under 30 mnutes.

I have no knowledge of whether NTFS will work or not.

My post referred to the fact the instructions state to use FAT32 which you can’t. (Due to file size)

I used exFAT which is a more optimised file structure for Memory sticks … it’s almost a reduced instruction version of NTFS.

exFAT worked fine …. If you have used NTFS and it worked then good success for you.

If you scrolled down you'd have seen this note...still contradictory to what's on the top of the page. But it's not hard to scroll down a page for two seconds.

Yes .. accept that, but it is still wrong about format of those cards ... you cannot use 64GB card with FAT32   (at least as designed and formatting from W10)

As a software installtion guide it is poorply written and contains factual errors.

Hello All, I finally updated my Navigation system successfully. Thanks to all the helpful posts above.

Here are all the steps I did that worked for me,

  1. Download the map update from https://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-US/Updates after keying your VIN no. I got a zip file of 26GB.
  2. Took a 32GB SD card and formatted it to exFat(right click on the drive in your computer > Format > exFat) . It was in FAT32 by default, and the files would not copy. It would error out saying not enough space.
  3. Unzip the zip file in step1 and copy the contents into the SD card. I initially copied the zip file, and the Columbus gave me an error when searching for updates.
  4. Put in the SD card into one of the available slots.
  5. Choose Navigation > Settings > Version > Update ( SD Card /USB) option.
  6. The system finds the files and starts updating. The complete update took abt 40 mins, the duration of my commute :) . All my personal POIs also still in place.
