Is this shock absorbers

Featured Replies

Morning,

had an issue with 14 plate 1.4 for around a year now. Started off with really loud road noise, which was more noticable on way from work after car had been parked in sun most of day. Journey home is 40 miles of mway at 70 mph. In the morning into work took different route unless i was late and drove @60 mph and didnt really  notice the noise. So whilst driving home car would wobble, bit like a new born horse or giraffe would when standing, no vibrations through steering  wheel. It would drive like a windy day every day as if being blown about. Winter time cos of different conditions never noticed much i dont think. But now soon as the warm weather returns car all over again.

last year garage couldnt find anything at same time had all 4 tyres changed they needed changing anyway. At mot in April they put advisory of wet/seeping on shocks or suspension will have to double check, so i am waiting on aprice for shocks but before i get em done just after opinion what you people think is wrong.

when i asked my garage to look at id took a right hand turning and car lost a lot of control, like it had slipped on oil/ice , it was warm and sunny evening.

im useless at explaining so hope you understand what going on

Yeah, loss of control on bends is often a shock absorber lost its oil.

So the wet speeping shocker is the prime suspect. It will be obvious to garage as it will have lost a lot of oil.

Not strictly necessary but recommend when you change it to do the opposite side too, i e. change as a pair.

Always worth giving each corner of the car a good downward shove, if the shock has completely gone the corner will bounce up n down more than once. With the shock, it should just come back up and down once.

Old school check, and wont indicate a partially worm shock, but it will indicate one that is shot.

Faulty shock absorbers are a really big deal, so do get them checked out.

A short story:

Some years ago, a guy at work inherited an old car after his father died.

This guy was an odd combination of very smart, but also very tight-fisted and absolutely not interested in cars.

A suspension spring broke on his car, and he simply had that one spring replaced, without getting the suspension checked out.

Anyway, a short while after the repair he was obliged to change lane sharply on the motorway and it is suspected the combination of tired shocks and a very frisky new spring at one corner was why he found himself bounced off the road and into a field.

Hilariously for his colleagues at work, he told us that when he called the AA to come and rescue him, after waiting ages for the AA man to arrive, the AA man took one look at his car in the field, then explained that he was roadside assistance, and could do nothing until his car was at the side of the road, and then left the scene, obliging the guy to get another tow company to tow him out of the field and to the roadside so the AA would take him home. :D
