Next generation 3 series to be powered by BMW's first turbocharged engine.

EDIT: Title should include the word "petrol" ;)

Just heard something I thought was quite interesting. Not sure if it is general knowledge yet though so I thought I'd share it.

The next generation 3 series will be powered by the companies first turbocharged petrol engine. I was told what capacity but I'f forgotten  but it was at least 2.2

The news came from someone senior at BMW's Midlands engine plant.

I thought the BMW 2002 had a turbo fitted?

It has been rumoured for some time now and it was in autoexpress last week or the week before ( so it must be true!)

They are claiming pretty good economy from the engines but I still wouldnt mind a 535d Beemer (twin turboed 3 litre diesel) for an all rounder! :D

Yeah, it's a 3.0L twin turbo with around 305bhp.

my thoughts too.

Das erste europ

the BMW 2002 turbo if i remember correctly was the worlds first productions turbo petrol car car :)

and what about the new mini cooper S??

thats going to have a 1.6 turbo :)

They are putting a 3.0 twin turbo petrol engine in the new 3 series coupe and calling it the 335i?

306BHP and 295ft/lb torque.

It will also be 70kg lighter than the V8 with the same power ;)

gonna be a monster by the sounds of it :D

 how do you get 335i from 3.0l, I thought all modern BM model numbers were based on engine size - is this an AMD equivalent type thing going on?

Intresting to see what the fuel economy is on them. Hams Hall the Birmingham plant only makes 4 cyclinder engines so 2.2 would be about right.

I laugh about that plant as they built it to supply engines to rover and then got shot of it ending up with a factory with over capacity in the wrong place. Still german efficency hey.

I doubt it...it's just to get customers to pay yet more for yet another plastic badge!

it's just marketing for ya!

No they started mucking about a while back with early E designated cars. I had a friend with a 316 which had a 1.8 engine, that was on an E plate if I remember correctly. They also did a detuned 2.5 which they called a 323 (not to be confused with the earlier 323-went out with a guy who had one, very nice, him and the car) Nowadays they have the 535 turbo diesel which is a twin turbo 3.0. I guess that must be it, Will.

Is this the BMW your all on about?

Have put my order in for one last night :D - should be out September

Whether I actually get one or not is a different matter, but I shall see how manipulative I can be ;) - watch this space - and Shifty, I'll have you a race when I get it

Does this move into modern tecnology mean that they might even build a 4x4 performance car, surely not

that one is 4x4 isn't it?

that one is 4x4 isn't it?

Kin ell, so they have finally realised that with the exception of racing drivers most mere mortals can get more performance safely out of a 4 WD car than a RWD.

Next someone will be telling me theyve adopted realistic pricing !!! They could even buy a cheaper brand as VAG did with Skoda, anyone fancy a rebodied 3 series with a Lada badge ????

Nope, no 4x4 for UK 335is. BMW have long been making 4x4 3-series (dating back to the E30 generation), it's just they never sold them in the UK market.

The 335i was in last months Evo magazine i think it was. Being the the Car Club, i was told ages ago that a 3.0t is on the cards.
