Radiator fan coming on randomly...

In my case, the bottom one. I drew a red box around it.

However, it still seems to come on randomly although not for as long.

It is going back to Skoda for them to repair as another garage said it is likely the control module meaning that the entire fan unit has to be replaced as it is integrated.

My quote from an independent :

Radiator fan (incl control module) £342.50 (£411 incl)

Labour £142.50 (£171 incl) - 1.5hrs @£95 p/h

£582 total

However, when it goes back to Skoda, I will fight like Mike Tyson as the car was under warranty when it went into them for repair and owing to their misdiagnosis is no longer covered. They will foot the bill or I will see them in small claims.

As an aside, the boot's "Virtual pedal" they were supposed to repair no longer works so they will have to repair that as well and refit the lower valance as they left off the screws holding it in place. The mind boggles.

Thank you, I'm struggling to get that one out is it fixed with a clip as the top one came out super easy.

Good luck and I hope they get to the bottom of it and you're not out of pocket 🤞🏼

MIne certainly wasn't...it just popped out with a little jiggle and wiggle.

Just to highlight, we have the L&K model which looks a little different to the picture posted above mine. We seem to have an additional 645 relay.

Also to note, the independent garage said he hasn't heard of the relay thing (when I described the bottom one heating up even with swopping the fuses). He said the control module is a common fault and unfortunately, the entire unit has to be swopped out as it is integrated with the cooling fan unit.

My Superb TDI is just sitting in the garage doing it again - and found this - could be handy ! Thanks!

Been several weeks since we swapped out the Relay - Fan has come on once in that time so things much better.

We had a similar progression. A few weeks fine and then progressivelygot worse again. It is going in next week for the cooling fan and control module to be replaced along with sorting out the virtual pedal no longer working after Marshall Skoda "fixed" it.

Yep, mine starting to fail again too. Going to be an expensive fix.

Well, it is possible you may be able to source a second hand one although the labour will be the same. Frankly, seeing as it is apparently a common fault across the VW brands (AUDI, Skoda, VW and possibly SEAT) you should probably buy it new and hopefully get 6+ years out of it

In case it's any help to anyone in the future, the cause of this problem turned out to be a faulty relay (the 645 one in the engine bay fuse box), which was discombobulating the ECM.

Did a Carista scan, searched the fault code in this forum and found that a very helpful user called Bob3 had experienced and sorted the very same problem.

@Johncee did the relay replacement fix your fan issue? I have the same, but reading through your thread, other people are saying that the issue returns after a few weeks of replacing the fan relay??

After charging up the battery and driving to the garage, they confirmed the P068B error code but couldn't say what was causing it. And that a relay can't independently supply power as it needs a signal ???

Not certain we had that error code as I stated in my first post, the battery was completely drained and we had numerous error codes afterwards until a reset.

However, our independent suggested that we replace the entire cooling fan unit as the control module for the fan is, unfortunately, integrated into it. To be fair, the fan has come on since although significantly less often and not since we took returned from a road trip to France.
