Hi everyone. 

 

I am having issues changing the bonnet release cable.

 

If I was to remove the passenger airbag unit would it give access to where the cable runs through the bulkhead?

Don't know if this will help but when i changed mine on my MK2 i cut the old lever part off inside the car used some strong steel wire and tape and attached  the nipple end of the new cable to the cut cable of the old one inside the car then removed the rubber under the bonnet in the fire wall and pulled the old cable out while a friend fed the cable from inside the car this worked for me a bit of a fiddle but better than trying to take out aor bag

I have changed the cable in a similar way to how you have done, it seems to be slack now with what looks like an extra grommet half way along its length. 

I was after visual access to see what is going on. Under the bonnet it's back in all the clips and works if I pull the cable tight next to the lever.

 

Did you have a similar issue when changing yours?

I think you've not pulled the inner cable tight enough in the bonnet catch then. It's like bicycle brakes if that helps.
