Power Tailgate Fault

Featured Replies

Funny how you always expect this to happen sooner or later ….

Just opened the tailgate fine but when I came to close it pressed the button and it beeps 3 or 4 times and does not move. Tried keeping my finger on the button in case it needed the limits resetting but made no difference.

I can pull it down and at a certain position it will close and lock. When locked if I press the tailgate open or the fob it opens about a foot and a half and stops.

Anyone he this ?

TA !

Edit to say now tried all the quick fixes I can find so it's looking like a proper fault.

I've read the small print on my 'All Components Cover' and the two bits that stick out are ' We will not pay for' : Gas Struts ( are the tailgate struts classed as gas ? ) - Strikers and hinges ....

We will pay for Electrics: Control units (excludes software updates unless required as the result of replacing a covered component); switches; relays; wiper motor at the front and rear, heating blower motor, additional fan motor, window regulator motor, sunroof motor, locking motors (excluding closing aid and tailgate drive); and instrument clusters.

So looks like i'll be raiding the piggy bank :-(

I'd assume that the struts are linear actuators or something of their ilk rather than gas struts. Given the crunchy sound that come from mine (they sound like they've been lubed with sand and salt) they're definitely not being filled with gas :D

Nick, I've got the same problem and have had it for about 6 months now. Just not got round to biting the bullet and getting it fixed.

I've had a couple of garages look at it and other than saying it's knackered they can't tell what exactly has gone wrong.

I've seen a couple of other threads saying that Skoda will replace the struts for about £1,000 with fitting and vat (the genuine struts are £700 a pair) but you can get them on Ebay for around £260 a pair.

There are a few threads about this on here and most seem to bevdue to strut failure.  I think a few owners have switchedv to gas struts given the electric ones are so expensive.

Def wont be paying that but want to keep the power tailgate. I'll see what the dealer says you never know it may be covered by the warranty :D ! If not i'll be going down the eBay route. Does anyone recommend a trustworthy indi in the Sheffield area ?

The Garage at Sheaf Gardens are decent.  Not there cheapest but know their stuff.

I've used Auto Tecnic whenever my cars have been out of warranty and have always been happy with their service. They're based at the back of Meadowhell.

mines is intermittent atm.  I just push it down it and it seems to work for a few days!

Did yours start as an intermittant fault ? Mine packed up literally from opening to closing.

Ive only had the car for 6 months (2015 280 with 70k now), the occurence isn't very frequent unless Ive open it a few times in a short space of time, it will start beeping and the tailgate wont go down.  I just manually push it down and the next time i use the remote to open it, it works!

Cars booked in for MOT and Service next week. If it's not covered under warranty i've asked dealer to diagnose so at least i'll know how much the fix is I can then have a think on how i'm going to proceed ....

I've had this error a few times (boot is open, press button to close then it beeps a few times without moving), and it is intermittent.

Always seems to go away eventually - sometimes after an ignition cycle, or otherwise once I've manually forced the boot to be closed.

Hopefully I won't have to buy new struts anytime soon. Anyone know the part numbers?

Yeah no luck for me :-( Like Sherif said above £250 on eBay v £700 + fitting from Skoda …..

How difficult is it to swap over the struts?

Can’t  be that hard... Can it ?

Hmmm… only suspect area is getting to the wiring - that will be a pain for sure but worth it to save £500.

EDIT… Doh….. Just saw the attached vid. 🙄 You’re right, seems even I could’ve done that! 😁

Well.... Dealer want £115 to diagnose fault. I've said if it's not covered by warranty dont bother I dont want to waste £115 .... Just waiting for we need £115 to diagnose to see if it's covered or not :D ! I think I might call the warranty number to just check if anything to do with the tailgate is covered at least we can get the info here on the thread then.
