Sudden noisy engine (1.6 TDI)

Featured Replies

Hello

Been a long term Briskoda browser but first time posting.  Hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction with this.

I have a 2015 Octavia with the 1.6 TDI engine which has done 52k miles.  Yesterday I had the cambelt / water pump changed along with an interim service.

Today I have driven 525 miles from Berkshire to Aberdeen and after about 350 miles the engine suddenly started sounding really loud and rough similar to an old tractor !  The engine start / stop also started reporting an error but there are no other error messages or warning lights on.  I continued the journey and the car seems to operate OK at motorway speed without any noticeable drop ion fuel economy.

I’ve had the car since nearly new and it has always run like a dream up to now.  When I picked up the car yesterday from the garage if anything it sounded slightly quieter than normal and certainly fine when I first stopped after around 200 miles.  Do you think this has something to do with the work carried out or is it just a coincidence and this is something else entirely.

I’ve posted a link of a video of the noise on startup, running and revving which hopefully is accessible. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Zdq6T4-KzuuuGIE2YpRuR6CFpWn21x7/view?usp=drivesdk

Any help or advice much appreciated.

Many thanks

If your not entirely happy with the car after the service and cambelt change, Id take it back. It certainly sounds more clattery than usual! If the work was done by a Skoda dealer, I believe there is a two year warranty on belt changes.

Mines having a belt and pump change next month with its MOT.

Its worth checking that the timing hasn't slipped or is out of tolerance.  The CANBUS network will report this and you can also test for this in Module 01 (engine).

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately I can’t take the car back to the original garage without driving another 500 miles which I’m nervous to do with the engine making this noise.  Luckily I’ve found a VW specialist to take a look on Wednesday and we’ll see what comes to light.

Your options in that part of the world are: Specialist Cars in Aberdeen (reasonably good engineers); Aberdeen Volks Centre (VW Specialist); SVS Volkswagen in Dundee (VW Specialist) - depends on where you are in the world.

I'm sure that the folk on here in Scotland will help you out as much as possible. @e-Roottoot

Dundee Skoda specialist cars part of the John Clark group is the best of the others which are also John Clark group in Aberdeen and Perth IMHO / IME.     Best is Victoria Garage Maud, north of Aberdeen. Proper technicians / mechanics with all the gear and more than ideas like replacing parts.  A proper Skoda Garage.     EDIT.  Always worth calling them, they are very helpful. They know what they are talking about.

Definitely get the timing and tensioner/pulley  checked.

If the tensioner is wrong that could cause issues which would be expensive. Ditto if you had the water pump done check it.

Of course it could be something far less troublesome, but checking for the bad stuff makes sense.

Hope you get it sorted 👍

Got the car looked at yesterday by Aberdeen Volks Centre who diagnosed that the timing had been set up incorrectly !  They rectified and don't believe any lasting damage has been done thankfully.

Car is now back to being nice and quiet as it always had been :)

Now need to seek reimbursement of the bill from the original garage that did the cambelt last week...

@mpm44 - well done - glad it got sorted.  Now you've found a decent service place, you'll have to drive the 500 odd miles each way to keep it serviced there.  ROFL :biggrin:

I'm glad you've got it sorted. However I'd be looking for a clear explanation of exactly what went wrong.

This is pretty vague, and if I was a dodgy garage owner who didn't want to give you any money towards the fix, I'd tell you that there's no way you wouldn't have noticed that your car didn't have the timing set up correctly when you drove away from the garage. Presumably, something was not tightened properly after the original work, and 350 miles later, it worked loose, and the timing belt slipped (or whatever actually happened), and then the car started running badly.

So to give yourself the best chance of some money back from the garage who did the original work, I suggest you try and get a precise explanation of what the original garage failed to do correctly, and how that meant the problem only arose 350 miles later and why it required you using another garage to correct the problem. (In writing would be ideal, but I realise that might be difficult.) Good luck!

At a guess, the easy one is they didn’t set the belt tensioner correctly. It used to be quite easy to get that wrong, so there wasn’t enough or indeed was too much.
