Noob question - Cleaning car mats

Featured Replies

I'm currently on holiday and getting sand all inside the car.  I am managing to clear most of it out but the front car mats are secured to the floor.  How do I remove them??

I guess it is easy but I don't want to break anything trying.

There should be two clips, one each side, on the edge nearest the seat. Just pull the mat up and it will unclip.

Thanks @Kenny R.  I wasn't brave enough to try that,  I thought I might break something.

Hose them out and hang them on the line, I scrub 'em with a bit of car shampoo too.

Glad to know they are easy to maintain, @VRS_White_Hatch

Once you've got them out, and before hanging them on the line etc, literally bang them together or individually bang them against a wall. After that, but whilst they're still dry, try a vacuum cleaner on them.

You may want to think about rubber mats, so much easier to keep clean and "possibly" aid sound reduction. I have OE Skoda mats, not cheap but a perfect fit. Sold the originals to part fund (50%) the new rubber mats .

I hate smell and feel of rubber mats. :D

Have it on other car from the signature, but only during winter time.

I remove them, swing and slap them together outdoors, sometimes smack them with the flat of my hand (if I'm in the mood) to dislodge the worst of the stuff on them (not that they're ever that bad), then simply bring them into the house and run the vacuum over them, like they were carpet. That way I get the vacuum action, plus the bush sweeping action. Works pretty well and is very quick.

Cleaning the fitted carpet in the car is far more of a faff than cleaning the mats, IMO.

Its a great idea to have a set of rubber mats for when we go walking or the beach, the mats get dirty every time you go somewhere like that.

But I do like a bit of luxury, the 1200g per M2 from Ebay are excellent, really thick pile and wear well. Still look new.

Those are lovely, but as I don't have a vRS, I'd have to find some without the logo.

That's basically what I did on my previous car.  I hoovered them on my drive, after I vacuumed the car.  It helped get them a bit cleaner.

I could be tempted by rubber mats for those special journeys, though mainly for the kids!
