Creaking rear suspension, loud bang.

Featured Replies

We've purchased a used 2014 superb MK2, 80k on clock.

I've noticed the rear suspension is creaky, normally during damp weather.

Today I drove it away and after about 200 yards there was a loundish bang from the rear - sounded like a large spring twanging (if that makes sense).

We've had the car back to the place where we bought it once already and they have already done a few fixes (they have been very good).

They took it to their local garage who said they couldn't see a problem with the creaking. Should we be concerned about the banging noise? - only happened once so far.

I would take it to a Kwikfit or F1 autocentre. Tell them there was a loud bang from the rear and could they check if a spring has broken. Normally springs break off at the very top, the pig tail end. The broken piece can sometimes still be trapped in the suspension or have exited down the road. It will take them 5 mins to check. Usually at no charge. They can also check for obvious problems, worn bushes etc.

Ok, this is further than usual, but had the car been lying in the wet overnight? If so, it may just be that the handbrake had stuck on.

As to the creaking, that may be dry rear suspension bushes. You could try putting a few drops of brake fluid on them if that's better in wet conditions.

I suppose a sticky handbrake is common on mk2's? Any tips to prevent that? It's really annoying when I put it in gear and the car wont move at all at first and then the brake BANGS off and the car can move.

I was thinking that as I've had it before on other cars, it was the twang sound that made it sound different.

I'll pop it into quickfit and see what they say.

It's common on anything with a disc handbrake.

Never had such problem on previous cars or heard anyone mention it though.

On a Fabia II with rear drums you can get sticky brakes.

I hope you had this issue solved. My Superb TWD 2010 had similar symptoms and the rear brake disc metallic cover had given up, moved loose and resonated. It was replaced with a new cover. Eventually both sides had the same issue, the second time I already remembered what the sound was...

Took my car to a mechanic as my rear brake sticked and made a terrible noise on the freeway. Turns out both rear brake pistons were completely seized. Replaced brake shoes, discs and pads. No more sticky handbrake. So I guess it is not supposed to bang every time I start moving.

No. but it's not uncommon for the handbrake pads to rust to the discs if you leave the car over a weekend, and release with a bang on Monday morning as you drive off.
