Radiator fan relay wire (ground)

Featured Replies

Hi.

Excusse my simple language as I may not know those technical terms.

I am having trouble with my radiator fan not working, checked fuses, replaced relay, replaced both temperature sensors (don't even know if that's related). There is one thing which I can’t remember being there when I initially swapped relays; just looking at some relay brackets on the internet, on the side there is screw... is this to connect ground? I did not seem to have that; will it cause the circuit to be open? I have attached pic for reference

Thanks in advance

Tom

No. There is no ground connection to this module.

How many radiator fans are there, 1 or 2?

Which fuses have you checked?

Have you tried linking pins 1 and 2 of the radiator thermoswitch loom connector (the contacts either side of the connector latch?

Thanks Wino,

2 radiators, I have checked fuses on the battery I believe there is one strip fuse and one blade type. They  all fine.

I will try that... would this cause the fan to kick in?

I currently can't check if they are working with the air con on as it has got no gas.

Thanks again

Strip fuse 5, blade fuse 8 and blade fuse 11 are all involved in your car.

Yes, if the fans work at low speed they should both come on when those contacts are linked, if everything else is OK.

If they don't come on when you link 1 and 2, turn on the ignition (engine running or not, doesn't matter) then link contacts 1 & 3 instead. This should bring both fans on at full speed.

Mind fingers/hands!

I've tried it with ignition on.

Thanks in advance

I would expect at least a click from the module, if the wire between pin 2 and the fan control module is unbroken, maybe check the continuity of that brown/blue one; pin 3 of the 6-way connector at FCM.

Were all three of the fuses I mentioned OK?  Check that you have 12V (always) at pin 1 of that 6-way and at also pin 2 when the ignition is switched  on; while you're there.

Both fans may have completely worn out and failed at both speeds; they are 20 years old if original.  Brushes sticking in their holders seems to be a common fault, as well as the super-common low speed resistor burnout.

Would it be them  three to check or on the plug which would go in to this socket?

Nearly, not pin 6 though.
