First time towing our caravan

Featured Replies

Towed our caravan for the first time and to my surprise and disapointment I could not get cruise control to work, on the dash it showed an orange car with acc .

Every time I tried to set cruise it would not engage, dealer never mentioned this and he was specifically told it would tow.

Only use cruise on roads that are mildly populated but having to keep maintaining 60 mph with my right foot  for nearly 4.5 hours is not at all what I expected.

Our old Volvo was able to tow with cruise control.

It is supposed to have been correctly coded when I had the tow bar fitted (Westfalia )approved fitter.

Can anyone advise if it ought to accept cruise when towing or if the coding carried out is missing something.

On the towing capabilities the stability at 60 mph is a revelation, very stable, quiet and smooth indeed.

One of the benefits of running with the pack and ceding to their pressure that you must have fully integrated coded towing electrics.

ACC works for me with the factory fit towbar so could be mis-coded.

Mine works perfectly on cruise whilst towing my van.

My ACC works towing a caravan, you haven't got a tyre pressure warning have you?

I've had an issue when using a towbar bike rack and a heavily loaded car (3 bikes on the towbar, 4 passengers, 2 big dogs in the back, full roof pod) when the ACC has said it can't calibrate.

Its happened twice (on the same trip).

My thinking was that the car was a bit too heavy at the back and the radar was pointing too much at sky.

The car certainly didn't look excessively down at the back and handled pretty normally.

I've otherwise been able to use ACC with both the bike rack attached and also with my camping trailer.

Factory towbar (detachable type) added post build, Sportline 280 wagon.

I'm sure I read somewhere possibly on on here that the ACC on none factory tow bars needs calibrating

It must have something to do with stopping distances due to added train weight

Thanks for all of your responses,  I ought to mention the cruise worked as normal without caravan on tow once we made camp.

We lightly loaded both caravan and car as I was unsure how it would handle, caravan always loaded sensible, car 2 up with only luggage.

Caravan mro1100 kg , with 200 kg load alowance.

Definitely not overloaded for the car spec.

I will contact the Westfalia fitter to discuss.

Martin.

I fitted and coded an aftermarket towbar myself. Acc works when towing.
what could be an issue is that the canbus measures one of the brakelights on the caravan is out. Than acc does not work. I had this once. After a bulb change it was ok.

Hi everyone, appreciate your thoughts, I can confirm that there are no issues with the caravan brake  lights.

The tow bar was coded by Westfalia, I paid extra for this
