1.0l MPI Timing Belt Change at 50k/5yr - H2O pump?

Featured Replies

Quick question...

When changing the toothed/timing belt on a 1.0l MPI at 50k, is it necessary/recommended to change the water pump at the same time?

Or can the water pump be done separately, given the configuration of the engine?

This recommendation came about on the 1.8T and 1.9D engines because the cam belt drives the oxygen dihydride pump. This means doing all the work to replace the belt if you need to replace the water pump, and the water pump was effectively lived at about 1.5x the cambelt. I don't know the 1.0MPI engine.

Thanks Ken.

I've only got experience with the oil burners we've had... Octy 4x4, Octy Scout and Fabia Greenline. I guess I could phone my main dealer and pick their brains as to the 1.0l MPI.

The water pump does not need to be done the same time as the cambelt, it's run by a different belt. Also I would think twice about doing the cambelt at 50k, the Citigo has the same engine. Have a look at this

Skoda informed me that the Fabia is a every 5 year belt interval. There is no mileage recommendation on the belt.

Your choice, VW UK say different.

Just had my cambelt/water pump replaced on my September 2016 53k Octavia. Requested the old belt and its currently in a VAG box with an expiry date of 06/25. So a 5 year life on cambelts irrespective of mileage.

That's the last date that the new one from that box can be fitted as a brand new belt. Shelf life, not belt life.

Honda are now saying change cam belts at 100,000 miles or 90k if the car was made before 1997. I guess they must be using vastly superior belts to those used by VW, NOT!

Brought mine in August (used) 67 plate and the salesman mentioned about the Cambelt every 5 yearsv regards of millage. Bit poor of vw when I had a peugeot 107 for over 14 years from new with 150k miles and no belt change.

That is because the Peugeot 107 petrol doesn't have a belt, it has a chain.

The petrol engine was also a Toyota one.

The Diesel did have a belt but this was change at 140,000 miles or 10 years.

This was a Peugeot engine although few were sold in the UK.

The Belt manufacture ( Continental ) recommends checking the belt at 160 000 miles and then every 20 000 miles for the Skoda Fabia III.

Note this is different to what VW UK suggest for this belt. 😉

Thanks, AG Falco
