I've seen in the forums that the Octy MK1 brakes can be fitted to my fabby.

 

I'm wondering if these brakes on fleabay can be made to fit and what extras I would require.

 

I have the standard fabby 16" alloys

No, you have completely different hub carriers with 256mm discs.

You'd need to swap the entire front strut to ones with 288mm discs from a 2.0 MPI or a VRS and even then you'd still need the caliper carriers from a 312mm car as well as that kit.

ah ok. thanks for that. my front corners definitely need new pads (poss disks too) and I suspect I've got a wonky spring or two from the clunk she makes, so I'll have a nose at what's available in the local scrap yards

Complete vRS struts and rear springs may be a way to go, lowering an Elegance, stiffening it a bit, and uprating the front brakes at the same time.

Stiffening sounds lovely! I had a torsion strut-brace on a Nissan Almera I used to own and it made a world of difference to cornering. I had wonmdered if there were a similar beaaast availible for my fabby

Please expand on this. Why not? I remember when I performed the install, watching youtube vids on why they're a good thing, such as distributing the twist/bend forces and other science that I cannot remember.

What are your reasons for disliking them? I'm curious is the reason I am asking, not to cause an argument.

Baffling you with bu11$h1t!! All they do IRL is lock in the twist that your chassis already has.

312mm diameter front brake discs won't let you use anything smaller than 16" diameter front rims, so popular Fabia MK1 tyre sizes such as 185/60R14 and 195/50R15 can't be used. The ride on tyre sizes such as 195/45R16 fitted to 6.5J rims is hard and uncomfortable. They will perform great on a smooth racetrack, but on typical bumpy and potholed British roads, not so good.

Even still, they are a tight squeeze on a 16. 

Rarbs are generally the go to "brace" on fabias, thats where you'll see the biggest gains from. You probably do have 256mm brakes, look at the front calipers, if they have FSIII stamped on them they're 256mm.

Second pic has 288mm brakes, albeit thats on a mk2 fabia. I'll get up a pic of 312mm brakes soon as my cars just after being fitted with some.

With the amount of mk1 vRS' being broken you wont have trouble finding bits if you're serious.

Strut braces don't do anything on a road car, they do help on the track or on rally cars.

Spend the money on a RARB instead, they really help the handling.

I think to begine with, I will start off with the strruts and rear springs from a VRS, giving me stiffness and better braking.

 

I am in the process of moving to London though and will need to sell my VIvaro before I tackle anything on the Fabby though, but this is awesome info to be getting on woith

vRS struts and springs are an improvement, but might not be worth the cost of upgrading to. Eibach pro springs are meant to be a big gain over standard springs.

I got a set of (albeit used) coilovers for my mk1 for 70 euro, had to give them a clean but they went on with little fuss and work a treat at improving the handling. Only thing is the arb is fouling on the driveshaft so I have to get shorter droplinks (Strange cause my cars not low at all). Again, with the amount of vRS' being broken it wouldnt be hard to find a set of "pre-owned) coilovers at a decent price and just set them how you want.

Noob question alert!

 

what's a RARB?? I'm guessing "Rear Axle something"

This is a RARB, rear anti roll bar. Really its just a brace for the rear torsion beam. I think mine was £150 or so, whiteline one. Its adjustable to 3 settings, soft, middle and stiff. Had mine on the middle setting for a  while, then put it on the hard setting and have it their since. Easy to fit and makes such an improvement to these cars its unreal! 

Mine somehow slackened off and the car was not wanting to handle right at all, was so bad I thought it was the tyres being junk. Was under the car doing some other bits and took a notion to check the rarb, loose. 

Tightened the hell out of it and the cars back to being great again.

@Carlston your tyre size tables have incorrect load indices for 205/45R16 and 205/40R17. Should be 83 and 84 respectively as I'm sure you know.

 

Not that it matters in the slightest for this thread but I'm sure you pride yourself on your information being correct.:thumbup:

The charts are copied direct from wheel-size.com and include all their mistakes, of which there are too many to mention. It's not just tyre load indexes that are often wrong, but tyre pressures, rim widths, offsets, etc. However, below is my edited version:
