Towing with a Roomster

Featured Replies

Hi all and hope all are keeping well.

My trusty PoloTdi estate that has served me well for twenty years is having to be scrapped with 6 months Mot on it  because I cant find Rear axle beam for it.

I am looking at a Roomster to replace it and wondered from folks here which engine in their experience would be better?

I thought beteen a 1.6Tdi, 1.9Tdi and a 1.2Tsi 105hp but dubious about the difficulty in getting at things like egr’ on the 1.6,

I only tow occasionally, unbraked trailer so what do we reckon?

thanks

I had a similar train of thought before I bought mine as well.

I ruled out the petrol models (lacking in torque for towing) and all the diesels apart from the 1.9Tdi. It has the well regarded PD ('Pumpe Duse') engine with 105hp which is a bit gruff though long-lived, economical with enough torque to tow a small trailer. The 1.6 diesel engine has the same power output but has a DPF plus some other well documented reliability issues.

Just had mine remapped to 148hp at the flywheel (about 133hp at the wheels) by Darkside Developments nr Barnsley. Not a 'knock your socks off' improvement but gives a better and more accessible spread of torque which will be ideal for towing my medium sized dinghy trailer.

For ultimate practicality try to get one with roof rails already in place, ditto a tow bar.

1.9Tdi

every time when you want a tow car.

If the Max Towing weight unbraked is 450 kg and you stick to that any Roomster with any engine / gearbox will do just fine.

Maybe look at possible issues with pre 2012 1.2 TSI's or with Euro 5 1.6 TDI's that have had the fix, so that leads towards the 1.9 TDI.

Thanks folks, was the 1.9tdi fitted right up to 2015 as I cant find one ?

I think up to 2010 for the EU / UK.    Someone will correct that if wrong.

That explains why I cant find one  sod it! I really wanted a late model as I dont want to be welding for Mot’s any more

If the body work of our 2008 160K mile 1.4 TDi was anything to go by I wouldn’t worry too much about the tin worm in older Roomster’s.

My 2007 Roomie Scout was mint when sold earlier this year, no rust ANYWHERE.

Remapped the 1.9tdi was magnificent, and towing effortless.

Sold only because of the difficulties I had getting in and out !

As above - 1.9tdi discontinued 2010 (possibly at the time DPFs became mandatory)

!.9tdi produced oodles of torque and was very economical and reliable, if a little gruff.

Tinworm not an issue on Roomster

I consider my Roomster Scout 1,9tdi the best car I have owned in 50 years of motoring.  I still regret selling it.
