Space Saver for Sportline with Full Size spare fitted.

Featured Replies

I bought a new Sportline 1.5TSI DSG a couple of months ago with a full size spare wheel fitted from build.

I wondered if it is possible and what I'd need to replace the full size wheel with a space saver for the odd occasions we need more boot space.

I see in the boot that the carpet floor is at it's highest level and that when the wheel and polystyrene is removed, the carpet cannot drop down as it is wider than the gap available so presumably I would need another boot floor too ?

Has anyone any experience of this or ideas please ?

Thanks

I have a spare floor carpet and stick down trim strip for near the seat from my car which was delivered without a spare? I have now added a space saver wheel which needed the risers and the new floor as a 4x4.

Available near Leeds if you are interested?

About £60 new I would guess and used for less than 200 miles until the spare was fitted.

You would have to buy the space saver though.

My Sportline can only take a spacesaver as its a 4x4 and so has a higher floorpan to make room for the Haldex diff. And one of the few things I miss from my previous Golf SV is the ability to hide belongings under the boot floor! So if you want to replace your full-size spare wheel with a spacesaver, I'd be inclined to keep the existing boot floor and use the extra space under the boot floor as a hidey hole for shopping bags, walking boots and poles etc instead!

Thanks Ken.

Would you mind showing a photo of it please ?

Is it fairly rigid ?

How much would you like for it ?

The other problem with this, is if you intend to cram the boot full, you won’t be able to reach the spare unless you unload everything.   So maybe it is easier to put the spare and jack on the passenger floor, or slot it around your big item on these occasions

I carry a full sized alloy as a spare using the skinny spare Mount then packed out with “stuff” to keep the boot level.  OK, I loose a good chunk of volume in what is already a small boot but for me that’s a sacrifice worth making.  Here pre “stuff” packing.

However I had a bit of a Eureka moment recently and wondered if I could get the wheel in any other way.  Tools from the spare kit pack in a stupidly small bag, they fit in the LHS side pouch along with the standard 1l oil bottle.  With all the polystyrene removed and down to the floor, the wheel sits fine on its edge, then ratchet strapped to the rail that hold the hooks for the shopping bags.  It pops out the load cover on one side but all door closes fine, also I can get quite a bit of my “stuff” in the cavity of the wheel and between the wheel and the boot wall.  The wheels in a cover so luggage kept off the tyre, it gives a narrower but deeper boot that should work better for me.  Off cut of carpet acts as a perfect floor lining.

Now as they say, no pic = didn’t happen, but the car is in the dealers for fitting the reversing camera & dashcam so everything’s out of the boot but I’ll get shot once I put the spare back in.  👍

It is a thin carpet covered flexible board. If you are collecting £10 would be fine as I won’t use it again.
It is as new
