The speed limit for single carriageway roads in France is now 80kph rather than 90 kph.(unless a lower speed is indicated)

Of course they are, I'd forgotten that although it was in force when I last visited 2 years ago and all the roads I travelled on in Brittany had the new speed limit sign posted.  So the OPs sat nav update is actually correct.

I have to say that 80kph on many French roads is painfully slow !

Probably but most people would never hear them if people did not buy into them and propogate them.

I got my info from an authoritative website that was just trying to forewarn of the possible hassle people could face if caught using speed camera warnings and I think for the occasional traveller/holidaymaker, they are right to do so.

As a resident you are au fait with how things work over there and therefore you are somewhat blase about it, but people have a right to know the possibilities that await them should they transgress.

Speed camera locations are shown as symbols on every up to date roadmap, when temporary cameras are installed or where speedtraps are being set up its always publicised in advance in the newspapers and other media, the government website also shows the locations of all the speed cameras

Again, not so easy to follow for the tourist, especially if travelling solo.

When my car carried UK plates I regularly got waved through roadside inspections etc, but now with french plates it's a different story!

Alcotests are also carried out in the morning rush hours as well! regular occurence by/near me!

Also traffic infringements here in Finistere are normally stopped by young gendarmes, gaining street cred i suppose!

The Gendarmes use my car park to hide their vehicles when speed trapping, its a Zone 30 pedestrianised area so the limit is a little under 20 mph not that you would believe that to see how people drive.

After less than 5 minutes in the early afternoon the backlog of offenders waiting to be processed fills my car park and spills out into the road, more than 3/4 of the worst offenders are young mothers and there are always 2 or 3 that are drunk in charge of their children, they are taken away and the husband or family has to come for the children.

When they start kicking off its like the Jeremy Kyle show and they turn on their partners when they wisely ignore being commanded to beat up the Gendarmes.

There is usually always at least one mobylette without operational brakes, lights, generally held together with string & semi dried turds with an exhaust that advertises their presence and has the G men betting with each other on the outcome before they even come into view.

I used to cycle past the college & lycée (secondary school & college) as the students were being picked up, that was even richer pickings for the Gendarmes & they were frequently alcotesting there.

I have been informed that the single carriageway limit was reduced to 80kph from 90. Central government then allowed the departments to leave it at 80 or revert to 90. I think most chose to restore the limit to 90 on roads they deemed most suitable.

I shall be happy if that is true. I'm not a huge fan of motorways, autoroutes, autobahns etc, so I prefer to use N roads in France as we are now not tight for time. 50 mph seems stupidly slow on some of the wide flat roads we use.

Hay-on-wye  ---  have you tried it with dashes as per left  <-

Amundson sat nav even upto date is rubbish just use gmaps and if you get stopped just turn it off . The new one in my enyaq seems pretty good tho so possible completely new updates may come along

A tour of southern France

Amundsen - failed to find places (will try to capture a picture of this), showed max 80kph on all single carriageways which is incorrect as some allow 90kph. Didn't show 30 kph limits. Trying to mute the media - pause the music, go back to satnav turn up the volume to hear the instructions and music starts up again. Random view of roads - sometimes zoomed in sometimes distant view.

External satnav - iphone SE often failed to connect over good usb to media unit. When it did work, Waze would often not show any initial directions. Sitting there waiting to find out do we turn left or right onto road. It was better at showing speed limits and I liked the overspeed warnings.

Google - the mispronounciation of place names is annoying. Doesn't show real speed we are travelling like Waze.
