Dsg7 - Rough transmission between 2 and 3.

I know a lot of people had issue with the dsg7 transmission. I hope im not one of them. Someone told me that my problem is a fairly common issue that I shouldnt worry too much about. 

 

When I start the car in the morning, it sometimes makes a fairly rough transmission between 2 and 3 gear. It's only one time, and then there's nothing afterwards. 

 

Is this issue fixable? 

Or is it normal?

Hello there.  Is your car a 2014 car or do you have a more modern vehicle?

 

There are generally two types out there: DQ200 boxes for all Octy's with 1.6 engines and smaller.

DQ381's for 1.8 and 2.0 cars - which are generally found on cars newer than 2018.

 

DQ200 7 speed boxes are generally sealed units.  If you have issues, then I suggest filming the issue and showing it to your dealer.  However, on my DQ381 box for my 2.0 184bhp Scout, when cold, the gearbox sticks and holds onto 2nd gear and I agree that for that first change it is a little rough - subsequent changes are all fine.  I put this down to a cold box and the oil not got up to temperature - which will cause that lumpyness on that first change. 

 

For me, its normal.....I will be getting my DSG DQ381 gearbox oil changed around 40k miles (its not due formally until 80k miles, but I think this is too long) which will keep things sweet.  I've found that when you have dirty gearbox oil, the gearbox can be lumpy.  Not a lot to be done for the DQ200 really as its a sealed unit.  There are folk out there who have changed their DQ200 box oil:

Yeah sorry, I really should have told more about my car 😂 

 

Its a 2014 octavia estate, 1,8 180bhp with 175.000 km on the clock. 

For what I know, its a DQ200 with a sealed box.

No - I haven't seen a DQ200 box on a 1.8litre car - not impossible, but I think that does not seem right.  Can you get a scan of the car and look at module 02 transmission pls?

Sorry, english is not my first language, so Im not sure what you mean about the last part. Get a scan of the car?

 

Before I bought the car, skoda confirmed that it was a dsg7 transmission and that it had a sealed box that didnt need oil change 🤷‍♂️

Really? 

 

Think you'll find if it's not a manual, and not a 2.0 (Petrol or Diesel), then the DQ200 is one of the most common DSG's in Octavia's from 2014.  Our 1.8 Polo has the DQ200.

 

It's worth a search on here, for threads on failing DQ200's.

 

@e-Roottoot might have some useful pointers/info on '34H5' and '34F7' which may be relevant to this car.

@Gaz learn something new every day.....I didn't think the DQ200's were strong enough for anything larger than 1.6tdi engines....

My 1.6 diesel is the same, and sometimes between 1st and second in traffic. Car is 2018 and has 92k miles. Even when warm it can drive around town like the clutch has been let out too quickly now and again.

 

It’s the 7 speed DSG in mine. I checked with a gearbox specialist in Maidstone who says that whilst they are sealed for life, they can really benefit from a flush and new oil at high mileage.  It’s booked in for 18th October.

 

Ill let you know after it’s gone in how much difference it makes.

Yeah, that kinda describe what Im feeling as well. But only that one time when the engine is cold. Or that's the one time that's "really" rough. 

 

I would love to hear if new oil is gonna fix your problem mate. Please let me know.

The DQ200 has been getting  used on Front Wheel Drive cars with a max of 250 Nm from the factory since before 2009.

 

So they were on Fabia Mk2 1.4 TSI Twinchargers with 180 ps / 250Nm (& Audi A1 Twincharger 1.4TFSI 185ps /250 Nm) 

 

Also on VW Polo GTI 1.8 TSI's with 192ps & 250Nm when the DQ200 was fitted and 320 Nm when a manual.

 

There is a Service Campaign started in 2017 on some DQ200's from 2013-2015.

This is a Software Update '34H5'  VW Group never made it a Recall Action' or a RECALL in Europe.

It is a RECALL for the 2nd time in Australia, started in 2019.

So many were missed from the Recalls on 2009-2012 cars that was World Wide excluding Europe, and the Service Campaign in Australia which has now required the RECALL.

 

Re the Sealed DQ200.

Yes from the factory there is no Service Schedule or Guidelines on Oil Changes.

There are 2 oils., in the box and in the MCU.  (Wet Clutch DSG's have just 1 oil doing both functions.)

The World Wide Recall excluding Europe in 2013/14 was to change the Synthetic oil from Synthetic to Mineral and do a software update.

 

Then from 2013-2015 the reason for the Software Update was that some of the cars leaving the factory with the Synthetic Oil were having DQ200's cracking or leaking, it was a heat and pressure issue.

 

So basically the Oil can be changed, some people do it DIY.

There is a thread in the Fabia Mk2 section on doing it, one thread 'Famous DQ200 DSG Clutch Slip' where a member does it,

Also there are TPI's on DQ200 DSG's and there were clutch upgrades. That is covered in the 'Famous DQ200 clutch slip thread.'

Just a little side topic, but would a remap be bad then? Since the car would get higher nm.

Once the DQ200 is fit for purpose then they can be remapped.

 

There are Mk2 Fabia vRS with Stage 1 or 2.

I ran them with 320 Nm plus & 220ps plus with a standard box, but also with an uprated clutch and software remapped.

 

If the box is not right now and might need new clutches then tuning the engine for more power would not be simply clever.

And how can the dq200 be fit for purpose?. 

 

A store close to me offers remap for my car which will give it 220bhp / 350 nm.

VW designed and produced it for being Fit for Purpose' for up to 250 Nm.

 

They co-cked up and had to recall Millions world wide in 2013.

Then again since.

 

But they still produce them, Skoda have built like 5 million since 2015 when a new extension went on the factory, 

that was for use in 48 different VW Group vehicles.

 

Truth is they are not that fit for purpose so soon they will only be used with the Mild Hybrid 1.0 & 1.5. 

But until then VW Group / Skoda will still use ones like into the Fabia Mk4 not yet on sale.

 

If ones go wrong VW say 'tough titty'  only a few go wrong, but a few of 2,200 a day built by Skoda are many thousands,

So had the car into Kent Automotive today.

 

They changed the DSG7 speed oil and the difference is remarkable. Gearchanges below 40mph are much smoother. A particular issue was when approaching roundabouts (slowing down) then seeing a gap and increasing speed. Often had a jolt before, now its just so much nicer.

 

They update the Skoda service database as well.

 

Well worth the hour drive to get to Maidstone and they offer great service.

I dont have a service book with my car, (was told no Skodas do??) they logged on to the Skoda site and updated my vehicle with work done, so it shows on the Skoda Database, like having a service book stamp. Next owner will see what has been done

I have a service book lol? 

How much did you pay for the oil change on your dsg7?

Did they mention doing a software update as well since they have licensed equipment?

 

Was it both oils changed,

so in the box and the MCU oil that was changed or just one oil?

The cost was approx 120€.

 

I don’t think they did any software updates, it seems to have had a full dealer service before I got the car so assume any upgrades were done by Skoda in May before I got it.

 

As to oil, it said singular and they said they would get it driving smoothly again and do no more to keep the cost down for me.

 

They also do DSG tuning but I really don’t need anything like that.
