The reason I won't leave it with Skoda is that as it is intermittent it could be there for weeks and weeks. My usual garage is far better than Skoda. I will change around the coils 3&4. If there is no fault I will change them back next Sunday before going to the garage on the 20th

Do inspect and clean the connector pins, plug sockets on the two you swap around, get a magnifying glass out to check if you can and clean with electric contact cleaner, allow to fully dry before reconnecting.

Before doing so have a good look at any wiring and connectors check they are located and held correctly to nicks in insulation, the coil(s) are fully seated and connected, no crud,  crap or liquids around them.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

No more problems until the day I took the car into my normal garage. On the morning I took the car to my garage I wasn't expecting much. I didn't think thei diagnostic machine would pick up anything because I believed the car had reset codes when it was turned off. Luckily for me when i started the car up on that morning the engine light came on. I left it on and drove to the garage. I go them to connect the diagnostic machine up while it was still running. Low and behold they brought up the exact same error I did Coil 4. They replaced the coil  (plugs were fine) with an original, reset the codes. Now we wait to see what happens

Good but did you or the garage try swapping around with another coil to check the fault was the coil or to the point of the coil?

Yeap that might be the end of if you're lucky or the raw code was it or was checked that it was it.  Forget about it and keep driving.

The Skoda garage told me that codes are re-set when you turn the engine off. Yes they did swap coils over, they also did a compression test. Let's hope this is the end of this now

Yes you said before, there were still had codes on my wife's Fabia Mk3 after they'd been wiped by a lower level scanner let alone having turned the engine off dozens or perhaps (I forget) hundreds of times.

All's well that ends well.

Usual BS and 100% incorrect, any emissions related OBDII generic code will remain until erased with a fault code reader that can access the module, for safety related functions like ABS and airbags it has to be a high level one like Snap On or a dedicated Marque one like VCDS.

Low level codes like a high resistance or open circuit parking light bulb have a reset counter, if the fault is corrected, you may have replaced the bulb or cleaned a dirty contact then it does a countdown of X number (say 99) driving cycles free of the error being detected and when it reaches zero the fault code is erased, intermittent faults unless they heal up on their own will usually remain.

A fault code for an ignition coil will never auto-erase let alone each time the engine is switched off, it relates to emissions which are the reason OBDII codes were mandated.

When a garage says "there are no fault codes and/or they have auto-erased" and they relate to emissions it translates to "our reader cannot interrogate the module and find them but we don't know that"

Hope you all had a good Christmas.

Thought it too good to be true. Wife at work starts the car and the engine light comes on. Nothing she can do so she turns the engine off and then on again and the engine light stays off. She gets home I put the reader on and nothing, no codes historical or otherwise. Today I was driving and the EPC light came on and the car started to vibrate. Not far from home so I  managed to get home and look at vehicle status which says No Entries Available, so I press the Info button and it says "STOP START SYSTEM STATUS". ERROR START - STOP SYSTEM. Connect my reader no error codes showing so I press the clear codes button to see if anything happens and low and behold  the EPC light goes out. I have disconnected the cable that goes to my Battery turning off the start stop system, took it for a drive, No problems. Will have to contact Skoda again tomorrow.
