2009 Skoda Fabia Mk II 1.4 Spark Plug Torque Specification?

Featured Replies

Hello!

I recently bought a Skoda Fabia 2009 Mk II with the 1.4l petrol engine. Engine code BXW. I'm planning to do some general maintenance, including changing the 4 spark plugs. I've bought the NGK 97237.

And my question is: How much NM in torque should these be tightened to? 25nm? 30nm?

Much thanks!

30NM

30NM

Hello,

Ive torqued them to 25nm. Is it enough?

not really, the figure is there for a reason, would it be ok "probably", is it ideal......not really.

I see that I used to use 25NM on the same engine in a late 2009 SEAT Ibiza 1.4, though I'm not sure where I got that value from, maybe from Haynes for a 2002  BBY 1.4, or maybe the NGK website.  My wife's 2015 1.2TSI is 22NM - okay a different engine and plug but maybe the same thread size, I've forgotten.

Some places where you find that figure give 2 figures for plugs that have crushable sealing washers, a low figure for first fit, a higher figure for refitting with a now crushed sealing washer.  Ignore my comment for the 1.2TSI engine as its plugs have thick "solid" sealing washers!

Are you sure that that NGK stock number is correct, I used to fit 5960 and the NGK UK partsfinder online, still lists that for all VW Group 1.4 BXW,  although all my others cars have had a "5 figure" stock number starting with 9????, so maybe the real world NGK stock numbers are more correct than their UK partsfinder online!

Edit:- it does seem to be a "V line" version equivalent to 5960 I've discovered so should be okay.

Yes, it's fine, I usually do pinched plus a quarter turn.

Correct it's the v line version, not sure about the differences but don't think its any worse.

Alright thanks, I rechecked the spark plugs without a torque wrench and can state that tightening them any more would be problematic.

Stuff like this is not critical if you're experienced and understand why it mustn't be too tight, I never follow a recipe when I cook so I don't measure ingredients, this is exactly the same principle.

yes ignoring torque figures is great with "experience"........ causes HGV wheels to come loose and fall off !!...........

ingredients in a recipe wrong just make it taste ****e............torque figures wrong can cause issues with all sorts..............the whole point of "not being to tight" is why there is torque figure in the first place..................not the same principle at all

Just.

Stop.

Being.

A.

D!ck.

A spark plug is not a safety critical item.

What is WRONG with you!

I would never advocate cutting corners on safety critical components, I check torque on my van wheelnuts every week.

I never attack you, why are you having a go at me?

There's no excuse for it, if your personal life is sad then you have my sympathy but leave me the hell out of it.

ffs..........I never attacked you..............that's what you just did.........

I made a post ref your statement that ignoring spark plug torques is the same as ignoring the ingredients of a cooking recipe..............."imo"  it isn't and we are entitled to our opinions are we not........ ?

Your the first to call out people on all sorts, so don't play the victim now because someone disagree's with you.

I do have a happy life thanks very much, even more so now I know I got up your nose.......

and for the record before this turns into the usual Briskoda keyboard warrior bout....

I did NOT say spark plugs were safety critical, BUT you have to be careful "Imo" advising people over the internet to not worry about torque figures, yes you may have experience, but it's like teaching..... start with the rights and wrongs and let them gain their experience, you simply don't know what next item they will "just nip up".

If you think I'm wrong, then fine thats what discussions boards are for, but don't say I attacked you when I didn't.

Why is it so important to you to get up my nose, your post was a direct reply to mine, whereas I was quoting and replying to the OP about spark plugs, not bloody HGV wheel nuts.

This whole 'Safety Police' thing is a complete nonsense, if someone gives specific advice that is unsafe then it's reasonable to call it out, otherwise it's just worthless postcount padding.

believe me it is / was not important at all and was the last thing on my mind as are you.................but was just a bonus when I read your reply after your verbal attack (again)..........but to be fair, it was kind of expected as you hate anyone disagreeing with your view (which you will disagree with)

Overall to be honest I don't think I have ever called anyone a name / criticised their life etc on a forum ever, whether or not I agree with them, I hope I show more respect than that...... it's playground stuff...... but sadly it seems it's quite common practice and accepted here and the fact someone actually likes your post shows the mentallity.

I simply disagreed with your statement...............that WAS IT......

But hey I really don't give a flying f**k about you or your opinion and life goes on,

Please expand on what you consider my mentallity (sic) is for "liking" the post and in return I will explain to you why I chose to add a thanks/like/groan to Sepulchraves posting and not yours which is the one that I actually wanted to react to.
