Just wanted to say hello because it's polite.
I have been a lurker here for months but not anymore. Decided to finally join here for good
My car is a MK1 Fabia 1.4 MPi, 8 valve. Yes it's slow, yes it doesn't have the best gas mileage. Does it take me anywhere I want to go? Yes, and comfortably so. Therefore it's more than enough :D
I'm pretty new into cars but already replaced so many things on it myself: fuel pump, oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, horn, radio, power steering fluid, tires (well, I just ordered them but still), coolant flush, coolant tank, oil pressure sensor and many more... since there is always something to replace either because it's broken or preventively, since I am almost as old as the car. I'm 21 and my car is from 2002.

Here's a picture of my chariot

Hope y'all are having a good time!

Nice looking Fabia there. Welcome to the forums! Is it orange or red?

It's called Cayenne red. "Cayenne" as in the pepper, not the Porsche, sadly... :) it shines orange in strong light. Looks like it's metallic
Funny how the previous owner could afford this expensive paint, power mirrors, heated mirrors, fog lights, but did not choose to have A/C.

Thanks for the welcome!

I thought it was, comes across similarly to the Flamenco Red of the post-facelift models (like mine). By the looks of it you've got a Comfort trim which came standard with the electric heated mirrors and fog lights over the Classic model. Air conditioning was still optional for the lower-end engine based Comforts. You'll have electric windows too if I'm not mistaken?

I think this is the Classic trim level. Weird I know, but it has the badges on the front fenders. Maybe the fenders have been replaced at one point and this is the Comfort trim actually?
Maybe you can tell me from the image. I don't really know the trim levels that well.

Yes the windows are electric in the front only. Not that it bothers me that the back windows are crank since they are one less thing to worry about. I rarely have passengers in the back anyway so
Flamenco Red is very similar but the Cayenne red seems to have lighter tones and reflections, if you know what I mean.

It must have something to do with the Mainland EU specification or something as that's a Classic based on the seats and black plastic door handles. I'd hazard a guess and say that your trim levels where you are aren't the same as the ones we got here as the Classic didn't come with foglights or electric mirrors here but came with that upholstery and door handles to name a few things.

Nice armrest by the way! I have the same one in my Fabia.

Take a look at the white build code label/sticker in the boot.

Which engine code have you got? AZE, AZF, AME, AQW, ATZ ?

The engine code might also be on a label on the engine/cambelt cover.

1.4 MPI 2000–2003 I4 AZE/AZF 1397 cc 44 kW (60 PS; 59 hp) at 5000 rpm 118 N⋅m (87 lb⋅ft) at 2600 rpm
1.4 MPI 1999–2003 I4 AME/AQW/ATZ 1397 cc 50 kW (68 PS; 67 hp) at 5000 rpm 120 N⋅m (89 lb⋅ft) at 2500 rpm

Oh it's an AQW. The one that has a lot of torque in the low end, great for city driving as you get the car moving fast. Why do you ask?

Thanks. I don't know how cars can not have armrests. Might have to get a nicer one, this one squeaks too much since the plastic is so cheap on it. At least I won't fall asleep at the wheel anytime soon with it :)

So it looks like a Classic but with the features of the Comfort? That's cool. I saw the higher end models have lighter colored seats, but that's a no from me because they look tough to keep clean.
It even has the powered headlights that move up and down, but I never used it myself, seems a bit much. I'd rather have ABS or that little dashboard monitor thing, where you can cycle screens between MPG, outside temperature etc.

Mines is pretty cheap but seems quite reasonable if you ask me.

I think all models have that so you can adjust the lights in case you have a heavy load in the rear. The trip computer type thing was an option I think for Classic spec models. Someone with more knowledge would be able to shine more of a light on it I reckon.

From the exterior it looks like a Comfort to me at least, on the inside it looks like a Classic with the occasional extra. I imagine that it'll be down to the variations in specification and options from new from the factory dependant on region, of course.

The 1.4MPI 8v engines appear to be OHV.

It looks like the Octavia MK1 used a similar engine with engine code AMD.

Skoda Octavia MK1

1.4 8v 1,397 cc (85.3 cu in) 4 cyl OHV 60 PS (44 kW; 59 hp) at 4500 rpm 120 N⋅m (89 lb⋅ft) at 2500 rpm AMD 1999–2001

Yes, original Skoda design IIRC?

That's right. On the plus side, the timing chain almost never has to be replaced because it's so wide and reliable.

On the negative side, look at my engine. I'm the fourth owner (mother in law gave me the car for free :D ) and it has 166,000 kilometers on the dash. Looks like the previous owners didn't know what oil changes were.

Also, wow isn't that 59hp engine in the Octavia really underpowered?

It depends how you drive it. It's all about economy and low end torque that's the selling point of that engine.

Cruising at 56mph on the motorway isn't going to be a problem. Car insurance should also be cheaper with so little engine power.

If it had been tuned up to produce 75HP with maximum torque coming in at a much higher 3,750rpm then top gear flexibility would have been ruined along with fuel economy.

Of course, the market has now moved on and we have 1.0 litre turbo charged fuel efficient petrol engines producing excellent torque from 2,000rpm.
