Steering issue/concern

Featured Replies

Hi all
Out in wife’s car last night and suddenly went to the right ( felt very strange as though the steering wheel wasn’t connected) then suddenly kicked back and all ok
Done it a few times but only for what seems like a split second

Any ideas what could be up

Sounds like the PAS is cutting out momentarily, you should check the main PAS fuse on top of the battery for signs of cracking or loose connection.

All sorted just now, ball joint loose in end of wishbone, 2 x bolts loose, other nearly right out

complete unit was replaced a few months ago ( other side still dog tight)

luckily I used it last night

Ooh that could've been bad if the last bolt had gone.  An illustration of why those should be replaced rather than re-used, perhaps.

Probably not tightened, I had something similar once, drastic torque steer when I had neglected to tighten IIRC the inner wishbone pivot bolt.

Did she say "oh yes, it's felt a bit odd for a very long time!"?

Yeah, that's probably the simplest explanation, or someone read the 20Nm + 90° tightening spec and didn't understand the last bit, so didn't do it.

Both wishbones had been bought as complete units back end of May while replacing all the suspension/brakes etc

who ever built it up likely hasn’t tightened it up.

should I have checked ? Maybe but shouldn’t really have too

And no she never noticed 🙄
