Used Octavia with a few issues

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm a new skoda owner since Friday .

It is a 2008 1.9 TDI 105bhp.

I'm having a few issues with it.

#1. Temperature gauge stays between 60-70 degrees when Im driving. But when I'm idling or in stop go traffic it goes up to 90 degrees . I'm thinking thermostat ? Any ideas?

#2. When I go start the car it clicks and sounds like a dead battery but after holding for a few seconds it cranks and starts. Any ideas? Lazy starter?

#3. The buttons on the key don't work,so no central locking  , so have to use the key in the door. Also the lock/unlock doors inside the car doesn't work either. Any ideas?

Sorry just got this car and seem to always have trouble with cars I get!

  1. Most likely thermostat, with the temperature gauge controller as a second option.
  2. Get a deep load test on the battery. Most decent fast fit places will do that free if they get the business should you need a new battery.
  3. Does the LED in the key fob light up when you press the buttons? If not, the remote control battery needs replacing. Based on the internal button not working I'd suspect an issue with the car to door wiring. You will need to continuity test the wires for this.

Thanks gonna change the thermostat this weekend. Going to see how much one is from Skoda themselves tomorrow.

I tested the battery and battery seemed ok but I'll see if Halfords can test for free.

The light on the fob works and lights up when I press any of the buttons. Ye my guess is there a cable somewhere that's in bits and now the fob can't communicate with the car.

I said "decent fast fit places"; what makes you think I include Halfrauds in that list?

For 1, be aware that some people 'disguise' an overheating engine by removing the thermostat, or arrange a leak in the thermostat.

Did you buy this car from a dealer?

Thanks lads.

Changed the thermostat today.

Was a bit of a pain in the ass.

I see this Octavia doesn't have a drain nipple on the bottom of the radiator(that I could find find ) so just placed a big tray underneath the thermostat and pulled the thermostat housing out slowly and let the coolant drain into the tray.

The thermostat was stuck in the engine block, took a couple of bangs with a screwdriver and hammer but eventually got out.

Fitted new thermostat and filled with coolant and bleed.

Now temperature goes up to 90 and sits there the whole time. Happy days .

Battery was tested and is all fine.

I think it's an earth leakage somewhere in the starter so another day I will investigate further.
