Music on Android phone not visible

Featured Replies

Just got an octavia estate, and my android phone connects via Bluetooth fine. But when i go to look at the media folder over Bluetooth in the console, it just shows an empty folder. The folder name is the name of a music app i use on the phone (Hifi Cast). If i delete that app, it went to another (Spotify) and so on and so on. The folder is always empty.

Any ideas on how to get at my music on the phone?

I'd use Android auto

Thought it didn't work over Bluetooth and you had to use it wired?

You do, although a few people with most up to date software are saying wireless works.

It's not hard plugging the phone in to use it though. Mine works over Bluetooth if I use YouTube music though.

My phone has a dodgy connector and looses connection so not really an ideal option for me

I still think I should be able to see the media on the phone like a usb stick.

Depends how is stored I guess. If you're streaming then it's reliant on data etc.

Just a thought when you go into Bluetooth settings what options are selected on the phone? If I remember rightly there's one for phone calls and a separate one for media playback. Might be worth a look

I have both calls and media enabled in bluetooth.

But not streaming. The music is stored on the phone. There surely must be a way to make the collection visible to the car. Seems odd otherwise.

I got this working on my work iPhone but not on my private Pixel 3XL.

The iPhone 6 (old!) showed all music which I had available in Apple Music.

It seems like it's baked in the Bluetooth media protocol but Android doesn't provide data (mine didn't).

I did not have the Apple Podcasts app installed so when I selected podcasts in the console, it was empty.

I then installed Apple Podcasts and selected a random podcast and downloaded the most recent, it was available in the radio.

Yeah, the closest Ive got it working is if i have a music app active on the phone, then its music selection (say an album) will be playable (play, pause, next track) through the system. But if you look at the bluetooth folder its still empty. And you are restricted to playing that one album unless you change it on the phone! I feel I need a music app on the phone that makes all my music visible to the car.

I guess the issue is that with bluetooth, it defaults to a certain mode - in my case it has the phone as the media player, and the car as the speakers. What I want is the car to be the player, and the phone to be a dumb media storage device like a memory stick.

I found out it's an Bluetooth profile called AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

As part of version 1.5 it's possible to browse the data on your phone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bluetooth_profiles#Audio/Video_Remote_Control_Profile_(AVRCP)

It did start to work when I had Google Podcasts and TuneIn installed which seemed to have support for this.

Youtube Music (or at least the free tier) didn't support this.

YouTube music is working normaly, but you must have Premium (bljah yea Google, want more money) account..

Did a search for AVRCP music apps and found that a few supported it - downloaded one and it was the same issue as with my other apps. Cant browse the music files on the phone, but can play them - dependant on what the app was setup to play. eg if its setup to play an album, itll play that, and you can skip etc tracks in it. Or if its play all, it'll play all. But cant browse for artist or album. And in the media tab it shows an empty folder.

Ive had  to resort to old school memory stick of my music and that works fine.
