Q on performing own service

Featured Replies

My cars have been changed at 3 yr point (or less) so for last 8 or so cars been serviced under warranty & service packs.

As car has done so few miles, I purchased it at end of PCP deal .............. the 'Oil service due in 27 days'  message come up.

I'm more than capable for doing an oil service ..... but if I do this myself, how do I reset my car to clear alarm, and can I update my service record on-line or ask dealer to do so ?

I don't imagine for one second that Skoda would update your service record if they themselves didn't do the service.

As for resetting your alarm, in the past I've done a reset for a service warning in my sons 2013 Octavia by searching You tube for a way to do it. It worked, but I don't know if that facilty is available on more recent cars - certainly worth a Google though. Other people will know better than me, but I think a reset is possible using an OBD11 device. If it is, they're cheap enough to buy.

Just had  search and found this and it looks very similar to how I remember doing it to my sons car.  https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+reset+service+warning+due+in+2018+skoda+kodiaq&oq=how++to+reset+service+warning+due+in+2018+skoda+kodiaq&aqs=chrome..69i57.32650j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#kpvalbx=_-EptYdbeHYHXkgWT1azYBg25

Anybody happen to have details of what is in a standard oil service ?

Is it just change oil & filter ?

I'm wrestling with the same conundrum right now (except ours is 4 years old).  I've always done my own servicing, but this is the newest (and heaviest!) car we've ever had.  Plus, I'm recovering from Covid and really don't much fancy crawling under it just now...😁

The supplying dealer wanted £406 for the 4 year service, which they told me was oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and pollen filter.  Even at Eurocarparts prices using Mobil 1 and Mann filters, the parts would only have been about £100 retail.  I was thinking that maybe I wasn't too ill to do it myself, after all, (Strange the effect that getting fleeced £400 smackers can have on your heath!) when I noticed that Skoda UK offer fixed-price servicing:

https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/servicing-maintenance-fixed-price

Scroll down until you get to the schedule.

"extended scope"  for the three year one is explained here:

https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/extended-scope

(along with a wonderfully sexist piccy of a bloke who looks like he's "mansplaining" to a woman what oil is)!🤣

Doesn't look like the extended service is anything you probably wouldn't have done anyway!

You'll also see that (in my case) the 4 year one doesn't involve the fuel filter after all.

Anyway, the "bottom line" is that it's booked in with a different dealer (but still a proper Skoda dealer) for the 4 year service for £220 on Monday.  I don't mind paying that for the convenience and another genuine stamp in the history, given the value of the car and the way second hand prices are at present.

OK as posted above have reset oil service due message ....

I'll do my own oil service, couple of questions for the knowledgeable guys

# Is it just change oil & filter, anything else due in 'Oil Service'

# Q on the oil ....

a. Went to owners book, you would think Oil capacity would be stated ... nope, all it says is top up in 0.5L increments - anybody know the capacity .... it's the 190 Diesel

b.  For oil spec I was expecting something simple like use "Fully Synthetic 5W40"

Instead it says VW507 00, ACEA C3, API CJ-4       So my initial searches do find an ACEA C3 compliant at Euro Parts the following seem to suit (unless anyone knows different)

TRIPLE QX Fully Syn Engine Oil 5W-30 C3

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AG Engine Oil - 5W-30

Have you had it serviced by a garage before? If so, it should say on the job sheet / invoice how much oil they put in...

Yes been fully serviced for 3 years - but I don't keep paperwork .... that's in recycling

Did some Googling and found it 4.7L

So ordered oil & filter form Europarts .... 48% discount and free delivery

Manufacturer-specific oil grades are becoming more common now.  It's the VW spec that you want (possibly 507.00 - or I think there's another one, depending on whether you want "long life" or "fixed" service intervals.  It should at least tell you what oil specification in your handbook?

It does give ACEA C3 compliance as one option so I bought the Shell Helix Ultra

Depends on time interval as well as mileage.

Should really do a check of tyre tread, tyre pressures, brake pad thickness etc especially if you tend not to do any other time

Some parts need replacement (or checking) at certain age.  Pollen filter etc.   Others will be obvious (wiper blades etc) if they are no longer any good.

There are some items that need to be done at certain mileages, but not part of normal servicing schedule, eg DSG fluid change, spark plugs, haldex fluid and filter change.

The normal schedule tends to be based on doing about 9-10k miles per year, but as the car gets older, and if your mileage is significantly different affects what needs doing each time.   You need to be logging what was done and when, otherwise what is due in next few years becomes guesswork.

I have full servicing done by dealer - just as I had full annual service, and since then only a few thousand miles decide to do oil service my self.

As I'm changing pads & discs, and it had a Haldes & Air Con service 2 weeks ago, and new wipers in Sept ....... I keep regular eye on tyres ..... should be good with OIl & Filter change then.

Thanks you for your comments.

It is worth buying a Brake Fluid tester & using it IMO if you are not going to just be changing the Brake fluid first at 3 years then each 2 years.

Have checked .... 3yr service was carried out (& MOT) and at same time they did brake fluid change.

So having also had Haldex service, and Air-con service ...... when I change oil & filter, and a look over elsewhere should be fine until next service.

Glad you asked - made me check out brake fluid.
