Hi all.

Long time no posts but now have aquestiop for all you experts 🙂. I have a 66plate Yeti SE 1.2 TSI that has given me pefect service and peace of mind. It has just been serviced,MOT'd and brake fluid changed. BUT, I have been told that the CAMBELT must be replaced at a cost of £550!

It came as a bit of a shock after just paying £300 for the service ect.

I don't distrust the dealership but it does seem a bit excessive, or am I losing more of my marbles than I thought?🤔😒

I don't usually keep my cars this lomg but I haven't been able to find a car that sits all my needs a well as the Yeti(s) have.

Any thoughts or advice please?

Yes 5 years is the recommended change period
My local VAG specialist where I have things like cambelt changes etc done charge £429 for cambelt change on the 1.2 TSI.
Cheaper than the diesels because the water pump does not need changing on the 1.2 petrol yeti.

Well, if the cambelt breaks, a new engine is more like £5_500! An Indy specialist will be cheaper than a main stealer though.

According to VAG the water pump doesn't need changing on the 1.9D or 1.8T either. OTOH it's 15 minutes work when the cambelt is off anyway, and has a life of about 1.5x the cambelt.

I'm surprised your dealer didn't mention need for cambelt replacement when you booked your fifth year service.

(On second thoughts, maybe I shouldn't be surprised :sadsmile:)

Cambelt needs to be replaced every 5 years, regardless of mileage.

Mine is due in March - I'm saving up!

Speak to a VW specialist, most are around the £400-450 mark on the TSI engine.

My partner has the same engine in her car, the pump is separate so saves you a little bit of money, the belt kit cost me £60ish and I did it in a morning. 

 

Some smaller garages may do it for less, it will depend on the labour rate in your area. 
 

g6zru, get it done, dealer or indi, whatever/where-ever its small change to the cost of an engine rebuild if it decides to let go, some makes of cars I have had easily out last the "recommended" change interval ... but VAG in my experience everything seems to fail or wear out around the documented intervals.

We are talking about the 1.2 TSI here. You missed """ on the 1.2 petrol yeti.""" from my quote and the Yeti has never been fitted with the 1.9PD engine.

You missed my point entirely; the reason for water pump changes on some engines is common sense, not service recommendation. Accordingly, the omission of such a recommendation on other engines is a reason to check other sources, not a reason to not do the work.

g6zru, as mentioned by others, get a quote from your local garage.

It doesn't have to be a VAG dealer.

Local Independent down here is £50 pr hr + vat.

 

On another note, What other model cars have you been looking at?

It certainly is difficult to find a Yeti replacement.

..the Yeti is irreplaceable....I have been looking for 2 years!
