Kamiq Mirrors, improving the view.

Featured Replies

Is it just me or are the Kamiq mirrors a little too small? has anyone added overtaker mirrors or non electronic solutions.

I find the big seat headrests reduce the passenger side view.

Edited by gumdrop

I find them adequate, but as someone who drove HGVs years ago, apart from aesthetics I don't think you can have mirrors that are too big.

I don't understand your comment about the passenger side view, although I know your seats are different to mine.

Are they adjusted correctly? Aim to see the side of of your vehicle in your own mirrors. I do find glass, repeat glass, blind spot mirrors in the bottom inside corners of door mirrors effective. I can't figure out how you can see a head restraint in a door mirror.

I'm gonna hazard a guess here and assume that Gumdrop looks over his left shoulder when overtaking something to make sure he's clear to pull back in and the sports seats in the Monte Carlo are blocking his view.

He therefore has to rely on his mirror to get a view of what he's overtaken/overtaking and this is an instance of where a bigger mirror would be beneficial.

As olderman says I always (ex motorcyclist) look over the appropriate shoulder, as well as checking my mirrors, before any change of direction.

Look, Signal, Look, Maneuver, A routine ommited by most of todays drivers. The sports seats do obscure my view but I still look over my shoulder.

As an ex biker myself, I thought that might be the case. It's a bit like a lifesaver in effect.

On top of that though, as an ex HGV driver, I had to rely on mirrors, so the bigger the better.. You will learn to utilise the mirrors you have though, or at the very least it will ensure you take more care than usual.

Not HGV but I was taking truck mixers to be weighed as an apprentice (no car licence either, long story!) I drove a lot of different ehicle types after I passed my car test.

I was thinking about the nice Milenco mirrors I used on the Yetiis when towing the caravan

and I had a feeling they did an overtaker mirror, so I looked and sure enough .....

Whilst I'm a bit old school and I'm generally not keen on all of the electronic aids that are fitted to many cars nowadays e.g. Lane Assist I find a pain and switch it off every trip, I quite like the Side Assist that lights up the indicator on the inside of the mirror housing. Whilst it's not infallible as it's harder to see in bright conditions, I think it's a good aid to have and use in conjuction with the smallish mirrors we have.

On a personal level, I think the blind spot mirror is a good idea, but I think it will look odd and could be a target for ne'er do wells to try and knock off.

As an ex caravanner, you'll know what I mean when I say ; When fitted, will it foul the movement of your current mirror glass and will it hit the car when you lock the car and the mirrors fold in ?

Covid aside, I'm booked to go to France next year and I'm thinking that one of those could be very helpful, especially on motorways, so I'd be grateful if you'd let us know what you think of it if you buy one.

I used the larger milenco towing mirrors on my Yetiis and had no  problem when I had to fold them and in 12 years of towing never had them interferred with when parked with them folded in.

If I buy them I will let you know, most sellers will let you return them especially if you buy locally (Halfords for instance) There are other overtaker mirrors around, it's just a case of finding them.

I had a quick look yesterday, but I didn't spot any that looked to better than the Milenco ones. I wonder whether the mirror glass is in a fixed position or whether it's adjustable like our current door mirrors ? That could be a deal breaker if the glass isn't adjustable.

I think the mirror glass is convex and gives a large field of view on the Milenco.

Amazon; search; Blindspot Mirrors lots of convex stick on button mirrors

Didn't think of that. I'll await your report on whatever you end up buying. 😃

In the video, around 0.36 where the glass is replaced you can see the curvature quite clearly.

I actually saw it better right at the end of the video, but I get the picture.

I always understood that you pulled in from overtaking when you could see the radiator of the vehicle you had overtaken in your interior rear view mirror.

I watch for the radiator grill and continue to overtake until I have counted five then look signal and pull in.

But we are more concerned with seeing who is overtaking us! especially on the inside but moving out to

overtake on a 3 lane motorway can find you involved with a car from the third lane moving back into lane two.

That is what the extra mirrors are all about.

Quite, but the topic appeared to be drifting into a more general discussion and surely no one should be overtaking you on the inside, unless you are, say, in a turn right lane and the car overtaking you is going straight on?

Can you point to the statutory instrument in which overtaking on the LHS of a vehicle in an outer lane is banned?

Cars on motorways often accelerate past anything on the inside lane when joining the motorway from the down ramps.

There is no Act of Parliament or statutory instrument specifically making it illegal to overtake on the left, but The Highway Code states "do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake".   Two exception are 1. when overtaking a vehicle signalling a right turn and 2. when on a  multi-lane carriageway in slow moving traffic and the left hand lane is moving faster than the lane or lanes on the right. However, notice must be taken of any road signs or road markings that would prevent this.

There are other exceptions, notably on a motorway where gantry signs are showing "Stay in Lane".

However, depending on the circumstances, if overtaking on the left leads to an accident, the driver may be prosecuted for careless driving.

Exactly, so you can overtake a 55mph CLOGie on the inside quite legally.

Is 55mph slow moving traffic?  I doubt it.

Correct typo

I normally drive at 70ish mph where legal, and regularly get overtaken (mostly by Audiots and/or SUVs).

Well, that's their problem.
