Drivers door Speakers intermittent fault

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

I'm getting an intermittent loss of audio on the drivers door,

not all the time but enough that I've just faded it to the rears.

Google and the forum search have pointed to the Door loom and I've priced up the repair kit:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333814539014 & https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/194158396128

before I start snipping has anyone experienced this and could it have any other diagnosable cause?

she's a 2014 mk2 superb

many thanks

Keith

Not come across speaker issues usually locks or windows stop working first. Maybe you need to be absolutely sure before you start chopping a perfect loom. The kit is a good alternative to a genuine loom and associated labour. Plus soldering and lengthening the existing broken cables are an option.

Mine's a 63 plate facelift and had exactly this. In the course of a day went for intermittent loss when opening the door to permanent total loss.  It's a lottery which wires break first, I guess losing a speaker is better than central locking of electric windows but was annoying to have essentially mono system for couple of months until sorted as was just before start of lockdown No 1.  If one wire has gone then others won't be far behind so took decision to get complete new loom (which now has longer wires to stop it happening again) fitted at dealers.  From recollection was just over 200 quid all in so not too bad.  Seems likely you have the same problem but your issue could of course be a dodgy speaker or loose connection onto it.

Correcting spelling!

Pound to a penny it is the loom.

just an update - the loom was indeed looking very sorry for itself, just as well it was getting replaced as I don't think it would have lasted longer without causing problems.

the eBay wires and solder connectors worked ok but got a bit fiddly with the smaller wires so I ended up soldering them manually and just using heat shrink tape

the colours didn't really match but hey ho - needs must. all in all I think it will last for a good while.

I tested and replaced all wires however the speaker issue persists.

I've tested both the tweeter & door speaker they are ok, tested the loom and its also good.

Still looking at it - doesn't appear to be anything getting to the loom

I'm going to test the head unit then the Amp next - Blooming Pantalons

There can be more than one break in a wire.

also could it be the system has shut down the faulty circuits and a battery disconnect may sort it now?

A Very Happy New Year to all,

Some closure on this post at last:

tested all the wiring and every part of it is 100%, was really past the scratching head point..

got hold of another rns-510 head unit and it was only when powering it up whilst the head unit to test and it was still dangling out the fault cause became clear.

The brown speaker plug block looked as if it wasn't sitting properly in the radio harness connector - it was sitting a bit proud, closer look at it the top clips had snapped off and it was moving,
not a lot but enough it seems to impact on the entire driver side (the rear had started flaking out as well during December).

the loom for connector that isn't very big either and perhaps when pushing the radio back in it has inadvertently strained it.

I've pulled it out here to show what one it is:

for a fix I've hot glued it to the black connector block with the lock arm, should keep it from trying to run away.

Hallelujah I have all round sound :)

Thanks for all the comments and help - I still can't believe the state of that drivers door loom - 100% problems waiting to start happening..
