Rim Interchangeability

Featured Replies

Hi all - New first ever poster here from New Zealand.

Firstly, my apologies if this topic has been covered previously, however I am in a hurry to potentially conclude a deal as otherwise I may miss out.

Anyway - after nearly 20 years of driving Renaults,  I have just purchased my first Skoda - a 2017 (pre facelift) Octavia vRS liftback with 6 speed DSG. This car has factory fitted 18" Gemini rims, however it comes with only a space saver spare. In NZ (particularly the South Island) space savers are not particularly practical due to some of the distances between the remote rural towns.

I am therefore looking at full size second hand rims from wreckers yards, but all the Octavia wheels have been sold. One wrecker has offered me an 18" rim from a 2015 year Skoda Superb- this appears to be a 5 x point star pattern, with each spoke comprising 3 x individual "spokes".

Can anybody please advise me whether this wheel would interchange successfully between the Superb & my Octavia? I'm not concerned with the appearance of having mismatched wheels, but I am concerned whether such a set up would upset open road handling - particularly if it borders on the unsafe!

Thanks for any advice.

More than likely very similar fit. Check wheel offset et stamped on inside of rim.

Could be a wider rim. Vrs size is 7.5 wide I think. The 18s on the superb are often 8 inches wide also with a lower offset to compensate (44 compared to 51 on the Octavia).

Bolt pattern and center bore should be fine though.

It's the same stud pattern and centre bore, but may be a different width and/or offset. The full dimensions of an OEM wheel will be cast (aluminium alloy) or stamped (mild steel) into the wheel.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. From what I have been able to research, the OEM wheels on my Octavia vRS are: 7.5Jx18  5/112  ET51  d57.1.

An OEM rim from a 2008-2015 Superb 3T 2.0 TDI apparently should be 7.5Jx18  5/112  ET46  d57.1, so (depending on the width which I need to check with the wrecker) the only difference is the 5mm offset.

I guess my question now would be (provided they are the same rim width & run the same tyre size) Would having a wheel with a 5mm offset variance to the other 3 x rims on the car cause any problems/be safe?

Thanks for your input!

5mm is not a lot. . The superb wheel is going to be 5mm furthet back from the arches. As a spare wheel I wouldn't expect a problem.

Check clearances to strut on existing wheels.

The wrecker should give the OEM part number so that the part can be accurately identified.

If you want to use a steel rim as an 18" spare, the VW iD.3 uses a 7.5Jx18 ET50 5/112 57.1 steel rim.

Wrong way round. Lower offset means it's further out by 5mm. No issues with fitment. Only problem would be a slight imbalance in handling. You may not notice it. Actually thinking about it you would probably notice a bigger difference with a different tyre.

It doesn't make much sense getting a full size spare that doesn't match the specification of the other wheels, especially when it's so easy to get a 7.5Jx18 ET51 5/112 57.1 rim.

It's not just the Octavia MK3 that uses the 7.5Jx18 ET51 5/112 57.1 specification 18" rim. The Golf MK7 and some other cars in the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda group also use this specification.

Thanks to all contributors!

The wrecker just got back to me - the Superb rim is a 18x8 ET35! so definitely a "non starter".

Carlston, your idea of exploring other VAG makers of the correct rim size makes perfect sense - I will explore that option.

Many thanks!

It sounds like the 8Jx18 ET35 wheel from the wrecker is aftermarket as standard 18" Octavia MK3 rims don't use an offset anywhere near ET35.

It's worth checking to see if one of your 225/40R18 wheels fits in the spare wheel well...I'm not sure it will fit when inflated (it probably will when deflated). If it doesn't fit (too wide) it might be worth considering 205/50R17 fitted to a 6.5Jx17 ET38 steel rim (or alloy rim) from the Kodiaq (as a spare).

The VRS needs at least 17" rims to clear the calipers on the 340mm front brake discs...hence you can't use the usual 205/55R16 tyre fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET46 steel rim (as a spare).

Yes thanks. not concentrating I was assuming wrong way round (original ET46, replacement ET51).   Either way that combination wouldn't have been a problem.  ET35 likely a different story. Tks
