Sat nav seems to think I am in Germany

Featured Replies

I turn on sat nav and it’s location is Germany! It says my home, outside which I am parked, is 872  miles away. I put it through a car wash last week, which I have numerous times, not sure if connected.?

I changed the language to Turkish and chose the voice of Mehmet, no matter what my destination was it took me via his brothers carpet shop 😆

Sorry for the levity, it sounds like a hilarious situation, what does it say your journey time would be to Berlin?

Does it have a "Where am I?" function? It would be interesting to see exactly where it thinks it is.

Well, if it wasn't connected, it wouldn't display any location, even a wrong one! ;)

Based on this, I suspect you may have got a drop or two of water into the aerial base.

I have done the factory reset, no good. I have changed the “long Ariel “ no change. Is the dumpy little thing it screws into on the rooftop?.

This is a known issue with OEM Satnavs and often signals the start of the end, a Google search shows there are many similar forums posts

Our Octavia used to revert to Germany at tines a few years ago same 12 reg.

Have you tried tapping the square spidery symbol to the right of the display ? that takes the display to your present position.

Thanks I shall give it a go. Is that on the screen itself?

Nope. It just said the same thing. That would seem to be the compass!

Hi

I supect that the middle of Germany is simply the stored default location, i.e. the starting point before it gets a GPS signal.  If it stays stuck on that, it's a sign of no GPS signal reaching the head unit.

I strongly suspect that the roof mounted GPS antenna (the dumpy thing which contains a 12 volt powered amplifer) has had a dose of water inside it, which it has taken exception to.

Thank you. Can I fix it?

Yes, move to Germany!

Alright then, replace the ariel!

Well, you could try loosening the mast on the base, and giving it a fix of Water Displacement-40...

A quick search on here would have shown you that this is caused by a failure of the GPS aerial on the roof of the car, generally due to water ingress into the aerial base unit. If drying it out doesn't work then the only cure is a new aerial.

Thank you.

Have you tried rebooting it, I think fuse 8 in the box under the bonnet needs taking out for 5 mins , reinstall and try again  ----  check the fuse number though as i'm not certain!!

Regensburg Syndrome

My Amundsen2 started its descent to failure by repeatedly showing me parked in Dunkirk. The touchscreen subsequently became less and less driver controlled, changing stations, tracks and map size randomly, before at four and a half years old, Skoda UK replaced the complete unit. Water ingress at the aerial was never suggested and the car has sat outside since new.

However, I hope your problem is only car wash related and the water gremlin is soon banished.

Auf Wiedersehen, pet!

You're lucky. Here in Australia I have every street in Europe on my Nav screen but not an Australian street. Skoda Australia must have thought that we knew our way around. I mean it's only 4390 km from my house to Perth !!!
