Interesting HU/Radio Mystery Problem?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Bit of an interesting one. The HU in my car (mk2 20212 fabia estate) has no audio, no matter the source, radio/cd/aux. No crackle from speakers or anything. I got a VCDS scan and i got the vin decoded and here is what i found.

The radio model on the VIN (photo below) does not match the one i have in the car (photo below).  The RCD510 MP3 looks like some touchscreen thing. and the one i have is a basic model 310?? Upon removing the trim around the radio i noticed that the 4 screws were missing and actually in the glovebox :D  so someone has been there already.

Do i assume the original radio has been swapped out? If so could this be the issue to no sound? From this forum here it looks like it could potentially but not sure https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/help-no-sound-from-speakers.7175596/

Also here is part of the VCDS scan that brought up the radio.... Thanks in advance guys!!

Have you got another HU you can test with the existing speakers? You could have a dud internal component of some sort, like an amplification chip.

I'm just going off the little knowledge I have of 1990s Hi-Fi equipment :D

I know it's obvious, but if you have a multifunction wheel, pushing the volume wheel will mute the radio....

Or was it like this when you bought the car ?

The swing radio would be the standard fit.

Will that one have to be coded in to the car before i can try it out?

it was like this when i bought the car. I have the bog standard wheel with no buttons 😞

you will need the security code of the radio itself, but you should get something from it assuming it works.

Possibly, if it's like Mk1 stereos then you should have a code number in your service book IIRC. This is where my knowledge of MkIIs begins to run out a bit.

Edit: see below:

well the fact it was not screwed in tells you someone has most likely been trying to fix it.

The stereo is the amp etc, so as mentioned could just have failed.

Any warranty on the car ?

Nay this was a private sale! Which is cheaper, taking it to an auto electrician or buying another radio and hoping it works? :D

You need to test the speakers, it's possible someone fitted an aftermarket head unit which was too powerful and has blown the lot listening to terrible teenaged gurl music.

Good point! It has only had 2 previous lady owners, but you never know! (I thought aftermarket radios were a thing of the past! hey ho!)

Get prices for both?

Sepulchrave is right, especially if it has been like this since you purchased the car.

I didn't say there was, but there's a reason I'm on aftermarket speakers all round... :D

Back on topic, if you have VCDS have you checked to see whats ticked under the radio section ?

I wish i did but that's just the report from one of the lads on here when i took the car to him for some other things. He said he wasn't a techwizz on all aspects of VCDS so he couldn't help on the radio front. 😞

if hes local, run it back, dont need to be a tech wizzz.

Just login to the radio on the main section screen,

then click onto the long coding helper,

then click each byte inturn, and under one of them is the different sound systems......... Need to ensure it's coded with Active speakers / no sound system, then select "DO IT" and see what happens.

Like the image below from the topic on VW vortex.

@PatS9 any of this make sense to you mate? May need to pop back 😞

Mate where abouts do you live?

I have a spare unit that you can have for free if you need one as I recently fitted a complete new system in my Fabia. If you live far from me (Buckinghamshire) I can send it if you are willing to pay postage.
