Engine ECU - 1.6 tdi CAYC

Featured Replies

A replacement screen today was an opportunity to annoy the fitter by taking photos :)

Can't help but be shocked by the external state of the engine ECU, which set my mind wandering  ... I have the 'hunting' idle problem that's well documented on the Caddy forums, could the external damage indicate water ingress, and be the root cause?

So sense make it does

Having persevered and taken a few apart I would say not a chance in hell.

If you take it apart to be sure you will break an intact seal and have more than a good chance of creating a leak when you try to reseal it.

That isn't water damage but oxidisation from ambient moisture like any other aluminium underbonnet part.

I agree with J.R. defo aluminium oxidation on the cooling fins, the casing acting as a heatsink for the electronics situated in the casing, it totally normal where the aluminium has been exposed.

Unless it looks like its been out before and has signs of copious amounts of silicone in an attempt to reseal I'd leave well alone, its unlikely that water ingress has happened if its still factory sealed.

Just my opinion.🙂

Hi

Those ECU casings normally have a good elastomer seal.  However, the mating multi-pin connectors on the loom may not be quite as well sealed.  No harm in easing one off if it's accessible, and inspecting the state of the pins.  Take care putting it back that none of the pins get bent.

Computer with a cruddy heatsink can cause overheating and faulty operation.

There just wasn't time during the screen fit to take the connectors off, but I will have a look in the Spring .

There car is a Cat C write off with evidence of a previous messy screen change, so it wouldn't do any harm to remove the panel behind the N75 valve and have a better look.
