Wheel Hop

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a MK3 vRS 245 with a stage 2 set up running 333.6 bhp.

Naturally I encounter a fair amount of wheel hop in the damp/wet weather and also in the dry if I give it the full beans.

Mid range…..no problem at all.

What mods are out there to reduce/eliminate this ?

Thanks

You could try flexing your right ankle more gently at low speed, or even switching the traction control back on.

My traction control is ALWAYS on.

Almost 335 bhp through the front wheels…..nothing will stop it electronically.

I have Dynamic Chassis Control on it too.

So i‘m asking, are there any hardware mods that will help ?

This thing will happily spin in 3rd gear at 75 mph 🙈

You could try fitting anti castor and camber bushes which should help with wheel hop. Uprated engine bushes. A Quaife ATB/ LSD. It depends how much you want to spend really.

Sometimes it is better to de-tune a car so you can actually drive it quickly, rather than spinning the wheels and going no where. Or have the map altered to have the torque reduced in 1st and 2nd to help with traction.

Learn to modulate your throttle input AKA driving responsably.

It"s scary enough knowing that there is a generation of drivers who cannot make the connection between their right foot and the resultant wheel torque, who are a liability in snow & ice conditions, who cannot drive out of a muddy field etc, to realise that some of them plant the throttle with 335 hp in 3rd gear in wet conditions driving faster than the national speed limit is a sobering one.

Haha, I do.

I’ve been driving 34 years ! 🙄🙄🙄

So, rather than criticise my driving, does anyone know any suitable mods.

I know they exist for such events 😊

Polyurethane bushes will help to reduce it, but it'll come at the cost of increased NHV

Dogbone insert is a cheap way to help eliminate maybe 40% of the issue. Maybe take a look at your tyres too. If you run performance tyres then they will be suffering this time of year. A good set of winters for 4-5 months of the year will help save the nice rubber and also make it safer in the winter.

This! and traction control off - now I will just get manageable wheel spin without the horrible wheel hop. Be warned, you will increase the vibration in the car, especially in reverse. Some cars are worse than others, plenty of info on the web especially on the golf gti, Audi S3 forums as it is the same setup. Everyone telling him to 'drive more responsibly' should maybe just not reply, at no point did he say this was on public roads did he?

Anyway, I hated my wheel hop with stage 1 APR so fitted a dogbone insert from Powerflex, I went for the red one which is meant for diesel and supposed to be softer. I hate the extra vibrations but they are only in reverse so can live with it. You will need to get under the car and take a pic as there a two types of dogbone used and there is no way of knowing which one you have without looking.
