Fuel Cap Doesn't Spring Open

Featured Replies

Had this problem since I bought the car (got money off from the seller as a result) where the cap doesn't pop open when I pull the release from inside the car.

To combat this, I've had to wedge something under the pull release and then pry it open, see here:

I believe there's meant to be a wee metal thing to allow it to pop open, but I wouldn't know. This is it in the "unlocked" position:

Thanks in advance.

Ryan :)

It's possible the cable might have stretched. It's a while since I had a MkI so can't be sure. Have you got all the .PDF's from the Workshop manuals?

I do not, I just have my Grandad. :D

Oh that's a good point. I wasn't sure if there was anything behind that little tab thing (that locks) to push the cap out. Having never had a car that did this, besides my Mum's Toyota Auris, but it worked. :)

its the cable mate I have exactly the same thing but not got a new cable yet so every time I fill up I have to pop into the boot and pull the cable from behind the carpet its a stretched cable pull the carpet back on right side quarter see if its popped out of situ as there is a spring on it if not cable..

Not too much, but thank you! I've got the opposite problem where it doesn't open.

I'm missing that wee metal bit at the back.

Have you been in the boot and pulled the carpet back it may be back there that's where you get to the cable.

Hi again, does anyone know what the spring behind the locking pin/thing look like? That's the part I'm missing as when the lever is pulled the little locking pin retracts which does not indicate to me, a cabling issue as discussed before. :)

Isn't the spring integral with the cable as in this video?....

Do you mean the wee metal doohicky? If so, mine is what's missing. :)

That's the part that I haven't got. The little black retention thing still operates as normal. As long as the interior pull lever remains... well, pulled, then you can pry the cap open with a finger or the keys to the car.

Yeah I see your issue. I guess the little doohicky isn't sold as a spearate part from the filler housing.

I'll start reaching out to some local breakers when it's warmer. Start doing some dissections. Push comes to shove I can get the cap resprayed or something by a local fella. Cheers, Lee. :)

I've lightened your pic up. If you look at the shape pressed into the metal it definitely looks like that clip...

Thank you so much for the kind offer, Lee. I appreciate it a lot but I'll manage to sort it. :)

Why not ask one of our european members to buy it for you and post it over...   its got to be cheaper and Brisky member used to offer 'internal mail' services...
