Any update on this, was this a VW Group dealership or a VW Group Indie or general garage that you took it to, and what was the price to repair it?

All fixed, at a local chain in Edinburgh (Farmer). The wheel bearing cost £200, but then they replaced the ABS sensor and realigned the wheel so in total cost £300. They managed to sort it out in a morning so that was good and they are only a 5min walk from us, so good for getting back to work! The wheel is now much better but I have noticed that steering wheel is now slightly rotated left, which is annoying (I have emailed back to see if I can sort it out after the Christmas break…).

Yes I should say as it's part of the work to realign the road wheel - they must have took a left turn route to road test your car after the work. 😏

Oh you were very brave to get Farmers to do that work, I would have trusted that job to one of the local VW Group Indies, which would probably involve a bit more travelling, AVW for instance in the future, though there are a few other garages that like to work on Germanic cars.

Is Farmer bad? A colleague recommended them to me

'Farmer Autocare' Edinburgh  for anyone looking at trust pilot or other reviews.

Seems like luck of the draw which branch or staff you are dealing with.

the noise only started when I started driving in South Ayrshire

Sorry about that. :D

Just to clear this up and remove any/all blame from South Ayrshire roads - I eventually replaced both front bearings last week - and, we have been back driving on Ayrshire roads with no signs of front bearing noises!

That's more like it! :D

It's annoying that VW can't made wheel bearings that last longer, again so much for German engineering 'quality'. I'm sure I can hear the bearings on my wife's 2015 car but they're not too bad so I turn a deaf ear and it's in for it's annual service and MoT soon with an independent garage (at I think higher cost than Dealership) so lets see what they find.  I bet they don't pin down the annoying knock from underneath though.
