Failed MOT on rear brake discs and handbrake

Hi All,

Just failed the MOT first time after 8 years, so can't complain with 76k on the clock.,

Rear brakes disk were quite rusty, so fair enough.

Anyone had theirs replaced along with new pads, if so any idea of cost at an independent not a Skoda dealer.

I would guess one hour's labour plus parts. If they quote more than an hour and a half I would be looking elsewhere. It's best to have an ongoing relationship with a garage...one that wants repeat business by keeping you happy. Changing rear pads and discs is a very straightforward and easy job for a garage.

 

The Yeti has three rear brake disc sizes depending on model. 253mm, 272mm, and 282mm. The 253mm is a TRW brake system, 272mm is a Bosch system, and the 282mm is a TRW system.

Rear disc removal requires a very tight (and awkward to access) fastener to be removed, which requires a 12 point tool.  You might like to check with any proposed garage that they have done this job on a Yeti before, or the similar setup on a Golf etc.

 

The caliper pistons must be wound back with the correct tool, due to the presence of the handbrake self-adjusting mechanism.

Not on the smaller disc sizes, mine came out without fouling the carrier.

 

Anyone having worked on rear disc brakes in the last 25 years will have a piston wind back tool, they have been around since the Ford Sierra.

rear brake disc removal is a problem on the 4x4 because of the drive etc the others can be manipulated off

It was no problem at all on my 4x4, what prevents the larger discs being removed is that they catch on the caliper carrier.

 

I don't think its a 4x4 related problem.

Thanks Guys for the advice.

My Local Škoda dealer in Yeovil quoted me £311.53.

Except they are fully booked up till 16th January, (doh!), and my MOT expires on the 1st.

I'll have a shop around.

Are you not tempted to just do some very hard braking (obviously in safe circumstances) to see if you can just clean the discs up?

How much wear on the pads?

 

Another suggestion, drive short distances with the handbrake gently applied, it worked for me!

I have tried hard braking but looking at the disks there is only a half inch wide clear part of the disc, the rest is rust, cant seem to remove it.

Quite dramatic, really not sure how it got so bad.

My local garage who did the MOT, (who I trust), have quoted around £160 to replace the rear discs.

They can do that and retest before Xmas so all good.

Probably pay extra for pads at the same time.

I'm no mechanic, but I guess it makes sense to have new pads at the same time, especially is the current pads may have worn to shape to the current discs and might give uneven wear on the new discs?

That's a decent price, but I'd strongly recommend buying new pats to go with.

Think they either need to expand their service department, or Skoda need another dealership to be opened nearby.

 

Over 5 week waiting lists for some maintenance is not acceptable in my book, it’s longer than service interval countdown on Skoda cars.

Hi All,

So in the end it was £240 for rear discs and pads.
Sadly, the handbrake caliper and cables all needed replacement as well, so the total cost was £402.

Plus side is a year's MOT and vastly improved brakes and handbrake.

The joys of motoring - would have been a much steeper dealer bill if you'd had it done there though.
