Initial thoughts on my superchips remap

After careful consideration and having saved considerable money on insurance with a different provider who covered the modification, I decided to take advantage of superchips Christmas sale. 

 

I opted for one of their guys to come and install it via the ECU itself rather than a DIY job using the OBD port and this was all included in the price. 

 

Didn't take him long to do it yesterday and the gains are noticeable yet in a smooth and progressive way rather than a rip your face off short blast of torque. 

 

My car is a 1.4 TSI DSG and the gains go from 150bhp to 183bhp and from 254nm to 316nm. Locked in 4th gear at 30mph and it does pick up quickly with the extra torque whereas before you would need 3rd for the same level of initial take off. 

 

Once it goes past 4,000 revs, it really does keep on accelerating well as opposed to feeling somewhat strained at the top end before. 

 

Under normal acceleration, it seems to cruise up hills much easier whereas before it would have been more eager to change down. Obviously the torque is helpful on that front.

 

Too early to comment on MPG but I am switching to super unleaded and not because I've had the remap. I've been reading up that even on modern cars, this E10 petrol can lead to both poorer performance and less MPG. 

 

Time will tell but I'm very pleased with the remap thus far. 

interesting review and woukd be good to hear how things pan out...   i have a 1.4tsi 150 manual Kodiaq and have been mulling over whether it might benefit from a map...

Forgot to ask...   whats your engine code and is it the active cylinder tech version?  Im wary that might be an issue.

Was thinking if this also, no concerns regarding the dsg box and the torque?

No idea of the code but that active cylinder business first came along with the 1.5TSI so I understand

I was advised by one firm that the remap isn't close to what the DSG can handle.

No...   my 1.4tsi CZEA EA211 engine has ACT...   hence the wariness

@Doctor_Strange Which firm told you that about the DQ200 DSG?     

Superchips are quoting a good Nm figure there from their Remap.    It would be good to get the car on a Dyno.

 

On 1.4 TSI / TFSI Twinchargers with 180ps-185 ps as standard and 250 Nm a stage one could give 205-210 ps and 320 Nm or so and the DQ 200 was OK with that.

As long as you had a good DQ200 that is.

 

When VW did the 2015 1.8TSI Polo GTI it had 292 ps but the manual got 320Nm and the DSG which was a DQ200 only 250 Nm.

Last year, when first making enquiries, I contacted JBS auto designs. 316nm is 233 ft lbs

 

"Our custom Stage 1 doesn’t come close to the limit that these gearboxes can take with these engines fitted. Stage 1 we tend to see around 180BHP and 230Ftlb, which is 30BHP and 40Ftlb over stock and quite a way off the 280-300&flb that these gearboxes can take and do take when they are paired to the larger 1.8tsi engines also found in the VW/Audi range"

I'm not aware of any such feature in the 1.4 Octavia. I've never come across it in the dozens of articles I've read and videos I've watched before and during ownership.

that’s good to hear. I enquired with superchips a few weeks about about this but no one got back to me. Have seen on various forums the DQ200 can’t take a map, some say it can, but haven't actually heard from anyone that has had it done. 

@Doctor_Strange  I ran 1.4 TSI Twinchargers with over 300 Nm with Stage 1 & stage 2.  The box standard dealt with this but was better with uprated clutches & software when actually being booted and doing standing starts on the 1/4 miles.

I won't be launching my car or tanking it everywhere but there will be the odd occasion where faster acceleration is needed. Should be fine with standard clutches.

 

Superchips offer a warranty for £1 which pays out up to £8k for any problems caused as a direct result of the remap. No doubt the wear and tear get out card would be played in the event of any claim.

I know all about the Superchips warranty.   Please read it closely and see the T&C's.

Indeed. I was under no illusions that it was a good warranty. These warranties are always drafted in favour of the supplier.

On the Octavia the 1.4 TSI never had ACT, it was introduced first on other models.

Pay careful attention to the gear selection. Planting it in a higher gear and using the torque will put additional strain on the clutch. There is no issue at all by dropping a gear and using the power instead. A gear change puts far less wear on a clutch than the additional torque with a map at low revs/high load.

 

Please don't take what I'm saying as not to get a map. It's more of a bit of info to help keep clutches in good working order.

^^^  Strange one there IMO & IME. 

Planting in a higher gear in a DQ200 Twin Dry clutch DSG will have it accelerate or drop a gear or 2 and accelerate.

The Max BHP / Nm will occur at the RPM that the Remap was written to. 

 

I did not understand the OP's mention of 1.8TSI's in the  VW / Audi Range.

 

They only had the DQ200 DSG fitted with 180 PS max until the Polo GTI with 192 PS and still only 250 Nm.

The VW, Audi, Skoda, Seats with 1.8TSI's other than on the Polo were 150 ps or 180 ps and 185 lb/ft / 250 Nm max from the factory.

That was the max power / torque VW rated them to, 

even though they were fine with more power as we know.  Except many were not,  then there are the standard ones that needed the Service Campaign Actions.

So my reasoning is far more applicable to a manual. Must engage brain before writing stuff on briskoda.
