Correct oil for my Superb?

Featured Replies

I need some assistance and advice re my late October 2019 Superb SEL 2.0tdi manual hatchback.

Attached is a photo of its first service costs, in April, when the mileage was 10865 miles. I used my local independent garage as I always have done with previous Skodas for many years.

When I picked the car up, the mechanic and I had a very long and difficult discussion about the oil price. The mechanic assured me they had spent ages working out which oil should go in the engine, which apparently changed in October 2019, with now 5.3 litres required. He stated that it has to be VW 509 00 spec and that these cars are filled with 0w20. I have subsequently found out that what he said was correct, though some Skoda dealers didn't agree with me, or the local independent.

Anyway, the cost of what I was charged is the issue. The car has now done 24k miles and I am about to book it back in for another service. I have found 509 00 spec oils at various prices online, typically at around £60 - £75 for 6 litres, which is what it requires.

Do members feel it's appropriate for me to take printouts of these oils along to the local guy and insist he uses them, or indeed see if he will agree to me supplying these oils (I know they are not keen to have customers supplying their own oil for obvious reasons) if I assure him I am ordering the correct oil?

I'm also not sure about the fuel treatment and engine flush costs...are they reasonable, and needed?

Obviously I love  my car and want to ensure it has the correct oil, but not at any cost! I am going to be making a couple of trips to eastern Europe in the car in the spring, from my home in Scotland so I want to ensure things are bang on.

Thanks for any advice and replies!

The  oil the car left the factory with is VW 508 00 / 509 00  so 0w 20 FS IV.

They all did pre WLTP for the sake of getting the WLTP Certification.

That is the VW / Skoda recommended oil for your TDI.    VW509 00, 0w 20 FS IV.

...........................

Before the VW Group / Skoda went to 0w 20 FS IV the TDI's were using VW504 00 /507 00.  so 5w 30 FS III.

So there are dealers or garages that still will use VW507 00 for a TDI.

Some will use

5w 30 FS III

Some 0w 30 FS III    It is not the oil your car left the factory using or the VW Recommended oil thoigh.

Yes I understand all that and I want to continue to use 0w20.

It's the price I'm querying...

PS

That is a crazy price per Unit / Litre of Oil.      Pure rip off even for VW509 00.

The Engine Flush.

The Fuel Treatment.         Rip off.    Why did you pay that and have them top up the AdBlue.     Crazy price.

Who was this Arnold Clark, Park or West End?

The only thing not over priced is the Screen wash.    Did they really add screen wash and only charge £1 plus VAT?

Usually they charge for Fan Wash made from the tears of virgins.

None of them. A local independent in East Lothian. The only thing he got right was the spec, 0w20 as West End seemed happy not to use 0w20. But you've confirmed what I thought all along. I'll use a different independent and insist on showing them the 0w20 that I will supply to them.

Totally agree with Root,   put it down to experience and learn from it,  Next time go somewhere else and tell them exactly what you want and if they dont agree go somewhere that will agree.

Is the Service Indicator reset and the Service on the Skoda System?

The Labour is very reasonable.

Only an Oil & oil Filter service though.    Not a Oil & Inspection Service.

If the car is 2 years old 'MOT Due 22/10/ 2022,

then the Pollen Filter needs looked at if not done , area cleaned, vacuum filter or replace.

................................

Blue Chart is 3-10 Fixed Regime Servicing.

The service indicator was reset yes, but it was set to be serviced again at 20k, instead of being put into the variable service as I had requested.

Since then, I reset it myself at 20k miles and so when it goes in for its upcoming service at another local independent, I will ensure they set the interval to variable, given that it's using the best longlife oil.

And yes, it's ironic that it would have been less, considerably, if I'd taken it for the fixed price dealer service.

It is not using the best Long Life oil,

just expensive long life oil & to the spec to get the WLTP / RDE results VW group needed.

VW507 00 or VW509 00 are Long Life Oils and used even if on Fixed Services.

That is because it has a DPF.

Best have a 13 Month MOT done before 3 years old and get any Warranty Work done while there is the manufacturers

Same oil on ebay in the correct TPS packaging and everything else to what they would of used....  £57.50 for 5 litres

EDIT: £41.99.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153542280345?epid=22032608400&hash=item23bfd54499:g:k~MAAOSwvqde-ITJ

I’ve found TPS extremely cheap for oil, and of course the Quantum range is just as good or better than anything you get at Halfords, but a fraction of the price. I suspect it might be cheaper to buy direct from TPS as they always seem to have discounts on their oils.

The price the OP was charged is ludicrous, and probably the guy bought the oil in bulk from TPS at around £5 a litre or less. Huge fat profit!

The viscosity is the difference.

So 0w 20 FS IV rather than 5w 30 FS III  or even 0w 30 FS III.

In the past for the old tests VW Group / VW, SEAT, Audi might have added diesel to the engine oil for testing.

(They can argue that in court if they want to sue me.   They could show that they never ever in their cheating lives cheated tests.)

but they were not getting away with that for the WLTP / RDE.  So get new oil spec....

TPS is trade only now mate.

Or just a Local trusted Motor Factor that is not TPS.

@ TPS Fuchs do the Quantum now.

Or Asda, Tesco or where ever the oil is available at good prices. Comma oil is just dandy.

So good people, what to do with an 84k 2018 2 litre diesel thats been run on VW 507 and recently non-approved tesco gunk? What's missing? Fairy tears? Are Skoda gonna tell me off?

Drain sump and put 5-30 504/507 in it

Thanks SuperbTWM, might have that done at the dealer as it's due an MOT soon. I'm not doing any miles atm.

@daddio65 what non- approved Tesco junk was it?  Not just the to VW 504 00 / 507 00 5w 30 FS III they sell for petrol or diesel VW / Porsche etc?      Where do Tesco buy Junk oil from,,?    Which oil producer produces it?

?

Why was someone not getting to the correct spec be it on a VW Approved list or not?

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/479648-tesco-engine-oil-bargains

Personally i have more trust in Tesco PLC than i do in VW GROUP UK Franchised Main Dealerships and Workshop employees.

Can i ask what made you go for an engine flush ? Ive had mixed reports regarding these amd because i change oil regularly im not bothered with a flush.

If it is not a low SAPS oil then the DPF will clog prematurely, I bought 20l of Mannol oil that was supposed to be low SAPS but wasn't and took a chance, 3 oil changes later and the DPF differential pressure is disproportionately higher at 130k miles than it was at 100K miles.

Now they sell a VAG 504/507 version, before they just pretended to with trickery.
