Skoda Fabia 1.2 2009 power steering stiff

Featured Replies

Hello, I have Skoda Fabia 1.2 htp 2009 plate. The car is fantastic and very reliable, the only issue is when the tyre pressure goes even a little bit down the steering become stiff.  I have to park flat surfaces and every day check all four tyres have the same pressure.  Otherwise, it burns more fuel and is uncomfortable to drive.

 So you have a ( some ) puncture ( s ) then.

Probably rim seal type puncture ( s ).

Thanks. AG Falco

This would suggest that the steering is generally stiff with the slight tyre pressure loss compounding the issue, as putting air in the tyres cannot change steering assistance. The assistance level can be changed through VCDS, but I am wondering if you have no assistance due to component failure as even without PAS steering "weight" changes when the car is rolling. Also, rear tyre pressure has no effect on steering assistance - how much pressure are you loosing, over what period, and which tyres. Have you checked the PAS fluid reservoir level - this is located under the battery resulting in not many people checking.

 Please clarify the exact issue.

Mechanic checked and he said power steering motor weak.

That's possible; advice about checking hydraulic fluid, and indeed electrical connectors to PAS motor is because those are way cheaper than a new motor. Prices vary but a new genuine motor on E-bay is at least £265 for the part.

How has he identified this, and can he clarify "weak". Has he also "offered" a guaranteed resolution so you do not end up with him trying different things.

It does't mean a thing. If anything it means he hasn't a clue what's wrong.

Why don't you get the tyres fixed so they stay properly inflated for a start.
