Dash cam

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an Octavia iV with the USB C outlet on the rear view mirror. I would like to use this to power a DashCam but am having difficulty sourcing one that accepts this as a power source. Any help would be appreciated.

Have a look at this topic, you might find an answer:

Most of them do actually. Nextbase is the official Škoda supported brand though if you're uncomfortable picking on your own.

Almost all dash cams are 5v and are powered from a 12v/5v

adaptor, so are fine powered from a 5v usb socket, you just need the appropriate cable.

Yep, what @Kenny R said - or a USB-C to USB-A adapter (with a 90° angle) and use the cable that comes with the dash cam.

Go for a next's 322gx or similar you cant go wrong and if you want to hard wire it in place its easy enough takes about 40 mins on a warm day

and the wiring kits are plug and play and are only £13 via ebay or amazon , dont pay extra for one with Alexa its crap and you'd need your phone connected to it permanently

so pointless , and more to go wrong . I have a 322 and a 422  the 322 is £40- £50 cheaper and is a better unit .

I have recently (happily) returned to the Skoda brand & I am loving my Karoq TSi DSG.

It has the USB type C connection by the rear view mirror & I opted for a Road Angel 4k Halo dash cam, no screen to distract & quite neat when fitted.  I'm not too bothered about parking mode etc.  The USB by the mirror is only on with the engine running / ignition on.

Initially it would not work as the port delivers too much power.  Off I went investigating.  It appears that the USB type C setup is ambidextrous & because of that everything is duplicated, therefore you get double the power, as in when I charge my phone at home it tells me it's 'turbo charging'.

My work around this was to use a 90° USB male Type C plug to a USN type A female adapter, to a USB type A / type C lead into my dash cam.  It now works just fine.

Here are the links to what I bought:

I had two samsung OTG-USB-C adapters. Came with new phones, one end is USB-C and the other end is USB-A. Works perfectly. Don't waste money on special cables. Buy the adapter and use more common cable with USB-A-microUSB that the dash cams most likely have.

There's no such thing as USB delivering 'too much power'. The consuming device only draws what's necessary to operate. You will not fry a 5 watt device by plugging it into a 120 watt phone charger for example. Sounds like you either had a bad cable or there was some other problem. Glad you got it working, though 🙂

Here's my own setup. Garmin Dash Cam 57, polarising filter and USB-C to MicroUSB cable. The camera is completely hidden behind the rear view mirror from the driver's point of view.
