Been offered £22k for Mk3, would I be mad to go for a Mk4?

Featured Replies

I've been offered £22k for a Mk3 RS by WBAC, going to see what a dealer will offer me this afternoon against a Mk4 RS.

I've got about £12-13k left on my pcp, but I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing even considering a Mk4 with the current situation regarding the Mk4 software reliability issues.

What would you do?

What's your price to change, not your present offer? Bear in mind that your metadata includes "lots of bitz", which I'm taking to mean optional extras.

Having seen all the issues with the Mk4, and having also seen all the issues you've had with your Mk3, I woudn't go near a Mk 4 at the moment...

One year passed owning a mk4 RS TSI without any major issues. By the time you will get the car a lot can happen. I still have high hopes Skoda will sort things out.

Two conflicting views 😄

If your car is worth £22k, and the remainder due on PCP is £13k, and you like your current car, then keep it and pay the balance payment.

Seems to be too many software problems (which after 2 years have not been 100% fixed) on the mk4.   These are likely to irritate you.

What would you gain by changing it whilst current version is glitchy, perhaps a tiny bit of extra refinement, but lot more irritation.  Not worth it in my eyes.

Maybe wait till the mk4.5 TSI comes with 320 HP and 4x4 :D

Well I've had a good long discussion with them and they've guaranteed me £12½k for 12 months time, because that's how long the waiting list is for an RS!

In 12 months time I'll have paid off just under another £5k of the PCP.

I'm required to pay a £1k deposit to initiate the order.

However I'm now seriously split, because the availability of a Jag to a similar specification is the same 12 months, it's a little more, but I won't get the same offer as Skoda.

BMW wouldn't let me build a car to anything like the specification of my current car because it won't allow me to due to supply issues.

So I'm now thinking with that in mind that in 12 months time, they really SHOULD have got to grips with the gremlins and software and it may well arrive as a Mk4.5!

I specified the wireless charging, spare wheel, DCC and winter pack, travel assist + quartz grey paint.

I was going to have Mamba Green, but it's a solid colour rather than metallic and I'm seriously interested in the Phoenix Orange, but not sure whether I can live with it on a day to day basis.

So all in all, all I have actually achieved is to confuse myself even more! 🙃

If you haven't already, I'd urge you to take a drive in a Mk4, if not a vRS, then a TSi150. in my opinion, the Mk4 is a much nicer place to be than the Mk3, and look far better too.

Mine is a 1st Edition and had the trial KPH/MPH fix applied back in September '21. It is genuinely a lovely car to drive and the few remaining niggles are just that, niggles. In 12 months time I am sure those will have been sorted too.

Go for the Mk4.

Fix a typo or two

If the waiting list is 12 months, also have to consider if you will be as enthusiastic by the time it eventually arrives.

Not so much the waiting, but if something else becomes available that you would prefer (from whatever manufacturer), is on sale by the time it arrives, or the world has moved on and it has become uncool to buy anything other than an electric car.   This is an example but you will get the idea that 12 months is looking at crystal ball territory

Glad we could help. ;) 😅

Just do it 😂

Guaranteeing your car at 12.5k for the year is good. Sounds like they're desperate to get some sales.

Will you regret keeping your current car more than not going for the new one?

I don’t think the guaranteeing at £12.5K is a good deal at all.

If you sold now, you’d have c.10K, yes? (£22K - £12K). But in 12 months you’ll have c.£5K (12K - £7K)?

If you want a Mk4, you’d be better selling your Mk3 now for £22K and buying a cheap runaround whilst waiting for the Mk4.

IMO.

12 months is a long time to wait, and be tied in. A lot changes in 12 months!! While I feel Skoda should have most of the issues sorted in a year, there is absolutely no guarantees, my ACC issue is not a 'niggle' its a safety issue that may cause an accident and Skoda have not been interested at all in fixing it. This Mk4 is my 4th Octavia and definitely my last, I like the car but the software is dangerous and unacceptable, they have made no reasonable effort in fixing it, for me that is inexcusable for such a large manufacturer. The other main gripe I have with the Mk4 is the fact they couldn't be bothered to get the main touch display changed for RHD cars. The main buttons are as far as possible as they could make it away from the driver, its crazy, I have to lean across the car just to hit the 'Home' 'button', again penny pinching which is really annoying.

Good luck either way though as it is a nice car to drive when it works and you don't have to use the main touch screen!!

I think you should probably think plus or minus at least 20% on any delivery estimate with all the current uncertainty.  Maybe others will suggest different error percentage.

Therefore assume 12 months estimate to be 10-14 months.

Probably best to assume the worst, and get a surprise if early, rather than be disappointed if it turns up nearer 14 months.

Well I haven't made any decisions yet. These software issues are really bugging me (no pun intended) and putting me off, but the valuation of the car is making it tempting, especially with all of the problems I've had with my current car, just to get shot of it would be a bonus.

However the dealer has said that they will be able to get my PCP extended as a result of the long delivery times and delays.

I have now discounted the Jag which has gone out of my price range now when it comes to the petrol engine derivative.

The BMW is borderline due to configuration issues.

The only thing I can find is the new (MY22) Focus ST that's broadly similar in spec and a bit cheaper to buy, but I find Ford's manufacturers ratings rather poor rather off putting.

Had a look at Golf GTi, but they're silly money and as they're of the same "family" I suspect that they will be experiencing the same issues as Skoda.

Completely and utterly confused now.

You have pretty much nailed it, there isn't that much to choose from in that market place, tbh, why I have another Octavia (although I didn't research about the issues until I got the Mk4!! (School boy error) I like the Merc C class but its not cheap and a bit small..... Skoda does remain reasonable value for money.

Spot on. I moved to the MK4 and it was gone within 4 months of ownership. In my view, stick to the MK 3. Once I rejected the MK4 I went to a MK3.5 and it is outstanding.

No point in going for a Golf either, as you say they suffer the same issues and their infortainment is even more distracting that in the Octavia.

Only my view obviously, but I would stick with what you have unless you feel like going for something that is guaranteed to work, like something Japanese.

Yeah, I was wondering what else was out there. The Civic Type R I guess - but, IMHO, it's hideous!

Need an automatic (DSG or similar). I haven't driven a manual boxed car in nearly 20 years.

Depends on how big you want your car, maybe a 1 year old Kia Stinger would be a contender

Had a Kia before and never again. A fuel habit which would put a Hummer to shame.

I got my vRS end of March last year. A race blue dsg petrol estate.

It's had most of the 'character' software gremlins in that time.

Would I buy the same car now? Probably not as i'd go for an Enyaq however, if I could have the Octavia now or a 12 month wait to save the planet i'd take the vRS.

I love it.

Having looked around for something else that I would like and failing, I've notified the dealer that I won't be proceeding with the purchase of a Mk4 as I don't want all of the software and electronic systems issues that it currently has and as my Mk3 is now running well having had all of the electronic gremlins sorted, I'll be keeping it.

Also I don't want to be locked into deal for a car with known software and electronic system issues that Skoda seem to be in no hurry to rectify.

My view is that this is really sensible. You really don't need to suffer with that infotainment system!

Hope you continue to enjoy the MK3 now it is sorted.
