Updated clutch issues

Featured Replies

Have a MK1 1.9 TDI Fabia VRS PD130 recently got it mapped to 220bhp with new turbo, stage 2 clutch kit, whole new intercooler system, map sensor etc etc. However the clutch just isn’t right, I will be stopped in traffic and go to set off and the clutch is right to the floor. If I pull it back up with my foot it’s back straight away. I’ve bled it twice now thinking that may be the issue but it’s not. Only tonight noticed that now the car is leaking what seems like coolant but doesn’t have the coolant smell. it’s hard to tell where exactly the leak is coming from as it’s not leaking loads so spoke to some mates that are mechanics and they said it could be the slave cylinder. The clutch kit I got put in 3 weeks ago came with new slave cylinder so confused how that could be faulty already. Any other suggestions?? Been trying to find a slave cylinder online however seem a bit lost. Don’t want to fork more money out into the car for it to fail again ( if it is that). Anyone had similar issues and been able to resolve them or have any links to a slave cylinder that would fit??

Has the level in your brake fluid dropped at all during your issues or remained a consistent level ?

Stayed the same

That would suggest it’s not leaking from slave or clutch components as they use brake reservoir as part of the system. My clutch/dmf is coming to the end, and my pedal bites an inch from floor. What clutch kit did you put in? It’s not unknown for parts to fail, or be faulty from factory but thankfully rare. Did they bleed the slave ?

I’m not sure if they bled the slave, I’m assuming not. It was a Sachs Dmf kit, getting another slave sent out just Incase but don’t have much hope it will solve anything

Fairly certain it's not the slave leaking then. A professional mechanic mate of mine has said that the master cylinder often goes weeks after the slave was replaced. Just to treble check the other thing it might be, are then any issues with the brake pedal (travel and/or weight and/or sponginess having increased)

Brakes are fine haven’t noticed any difference in them. Was thinking might’ve been slave cylinder as been mentioned previously. Will get one ordered just to cover my back, wouldn’t hurt to give it a try

Just had a look now, looks like it’s leaking a bit near the gearbox where you’d bleed the clutch near passenger wishbone

Well, if it is the slave, the one fitted with the clutch change was defective (but very much the right thing to do).

Sounds like the job got botched, the pipework may have been damaged during refitting.

Also @Louise1512_ Very strongly seconded. And just as well you looked Louise; remote diagnosis will always pursue the 2 likely failures before the unlikely one.

Will get someone to look at the pipe work and see if that could possibly be the issue. Seems like it would make more sense, thank you!

Update :

Leak seems to be coming from where bleeder assembly is. Spoke to a mechanic and he explained the reason the clutch may be getting stuck is that it’s drawing air in. New bleeder assembly on way so fingers crossed it’s a quick fix. Thanks for everyone suggestions

That sounds plausible, but again is difficult to diagnose with physical access to the vehicle.

It's impossible to get a new slave cylinder operating without bleeding it so they must have done. Hopefully it's just a pipework leak as others have said.

It will either be the bleed thumbturn screw is not fully closed in the clutch bleed block or its seal is damaged or one of the two O rings are damaged, one is where the flexible pipe enters the blled block the other is where it connects to the slave cylinder, both are likely to have been disturbed when the clutch was replaced.

It should be easy for them to fix but then it should have been easy for them to do right in the first place, often those who make basic errors and incapable of finding them when a problem appears.
