ABS/ESP and red brake warning light on

Featured Replies

Did a 12 car rally in the Octavia L&K last night, and all 3 lights came on. Brake fluid level ok.

Thoughts?

Other than the usual mechanical / electric stuff that there are lots of threads covering, when was the brake fluid last changed or checked for H2o content?

Could the brake fluid have been overheating?

Thought about the overheating but lights still on this morning.

You're presuming that the lights haven't been caused by pad wear, and aren't latching.

Pads are more tham fine and were all stripped and cleaned very recently.

Pads not latching so will look at abs sensors

Could be caused by faulty abs unit, break in an abs cable, faulty abs sensor etc.

Scan the car with vcds or similar and it should guide you in the right direction.

Any chance you could have overheated the brakes or given the suspension a hard knock?

I didn't say the pads were latching; I said the pads were won and/or the lights were latching.

Just had it read at my local garage, and they are people I know through work, and it has come back as the abs pump.

I'm not surprised, but it's not the first call for a signalled ABS/ASR failure.

Might I ask where to go first Ken?

My first thoughts would be the battery top strip fuses, then one of the wheel sensors (but then you read the codes anyway to find out which corner to look at). ABS pump is a third order of probability, but the fuses must be intact to get a good code reading.

Did a 12 car rally on Friday night, 52 miles, and everything was fine until around the last 5 miles, then without warning, I got the 3 lights.

had this on our golf last month and it was the left rear wheel speed sensor was giving no reading, replaced and all back to normal, you need to get vcds so you can check these things

Had an Autel reader on it yesterday at my trusted garage, and it came back abs pump. It is booked in next Monday for a thorough looking at.

ahh thats a shame, never the simple fix is it!

Sadly not.

Once it has been done, I will post back on here.

Hopefully it is just an abs sensor.

Sorry for the late reply guys.

Turned out the abs pump was fubarred, and Skoda quoted me £1300 for a new one. Managed to get a second hand one from ABS City in Brum, at a cost of £150 which had the same part numbers on the pump and the ecu as mine, so took the gamble. Had it fitted and recoded by my local garage, and all fully working for a total cost of £350.

The moral of the story?

Don't use your daily driver to do 12 car rallies in, and use your road rally Yaris instead.
