New Scout FL - some mod questions, grill, 18in wheels etc

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, not been on here for a while.  Had a pre FL Vrs estate a few years back and hopefully picking up a red FL Scout Tdi on Friday.  It seems very clean, low mileage and impeccable history.

Already looking at some changes so just wondered if anyone had done similar.  First I have a set of 18in wheels to fit but cant really find any photos of them with non std wheels, anyone else fitted 18in to there scout?

Im looking to get a colour coded grill as I dont like the chrome one.  Ive seen the Superskoda or whatever its called selling them but anyone have one?

The door rubbing strips Id also like to get in red, anyone know how easy or difficult they are to replace?

I'll also be looking at getting it remapped at some point.

This will be my wifes car and to be honest we dont need the high setting so I was looking at maybe at some point lowering it down however from what I can see its the same suspension as the std 4x4 so changing springs to them will make no difference.  Anyone else looked into this?  There seems to be H&R springs available but thinking that might screw the geometry up too much as there stated as 55mm drop.

The Scout uses +15mm increased ride height suspension, compared to the non-Scout standard ride height versions.

The outside diameter of the Scout's tyres are about 30mm bigger. So that adds another 15mm to the ride height.

So the Scout's suspension increases the ride height by 15mm and the tyres increase the ride height about about another 15mm, ie. the Scout's ride height is about 30mm higher than the standard ride height 4x4 car (or the standard ride height 2WD car).

The Scout's front suspension has build code 2UB, which means that it is a rough-road design (+15mm increased ride height). The 2UA is the standard ride height, and the 2UC is the sports suspension (-15mm lowered ride height).

Front Suspension Build Codes

2UA = Standard design
2UB = Rough-road design
2UC = Sports version

(3) 1K0 412 303 H rubber stop for shock absorber 90MM 2 PR-G07,G06

Notice that the rubber bump stops are 20mm thicker on the 2UB car compared to the 2UA car.

If you fit standard springs, you should change these rubber bumps stops from the 90mm version to the 70mm version. However, you might find the bigger outside diameter tyres will now foul the top of the front wheelarch. It depends if the standard Scout has at least 20mm of clearance at the top of the tyre when the suspension is fully compressed.

You could keep the Scout's 90mm front rubber bump stops when changing to standard springs to give more clearance for the Scout's tyres, but the front suspension will bottom out much more easily.

If you didn't want Scout suspension, it would have made more sense to buy a standard ride height 4x4. For one thing, the standard car uses much cheaper tyre sizes, such as 225/45R17 instead of the Scout's 225/50R17.

Thanks for the info.  Id forgotten about 7zap so thanks for the reminder.  I'll maybe price up the springs.   Theres seems to be about 10 different springs for each with some cross over.  How do you know whats what?

This car was too good to miss.  Its in very good condition with impeccable history and low mileage so bought it based on that.  The ride height doesnt bother me too much but I like to tinker and this is one thing Id possibly look at over time.

As you say the bigger tyres come into play as well but It looks like there is loads of clearance.

Here's some information that I've found on Wikipedia about the Octavia MK2, and in particular the 4x4 models.

Notice that the 2.0TDI comes in nine different versions, ie. nine different engine codes. If you're lucky, you will have either engine code AZV or BKD as those are the only 2.0TDI engines that don't have DPF.

It looks like both the standard 4x4 and the Scout 4x4 have increased suspension height of 24mm. The Scout's increase in ride height is 40mm, the extra 16mm would be accounted for by the bigger outside diameter tyres.

Quote from Wikipedia

Two four-wheel-drive versions of the Octavia are made: the 4x4 and the Scout, both featuring a Haldex Traction four-wheel-drive system, based on a computer-controlled clutch centre coupling. The two models both have higher ground clearance than the standard Octavia, increased by 24 mm (0.9 in) for the 4x4 and by 40 mm (1.6 in) for the Scout.

The Scout, announced in 2006,[20] is only available with the estate body style, and has several crossover-style exterior modifications, such as larger bumpers.

The 4x4 non scout had raised suspension that was the same as the scout.  The bigger wheels and tyres then made the extra difference.  The pre fl 4x4 and scout both had BMM TDis rated at 140bhp with a dpf.  The fl can have either that or the CR 140, again with a dpf.  If it's the BMM it'll map to 185bhp on Stage 1 with the dpf removed.

As and when you get it get the haldex oil and filter changed and get the propshaft rubber doughnuts checked

Thanks, so that matches what I found out with the springs so only option to lower is go with the aftermarket lowering springs.

Cars had Haldex done recently and 2 cambelt changes based on age rather than miles. It's a 2010 model so I suspect CR.

Skoda lists ten standard ride height front springs for the 4x4, and ten standard ride height rear springs for the 4x4.

Kilen lists the following standard ride height springs for the Octavia MK2 2.0TDI Estate 4x4.

Front standard ride height springs

1K0411105BD

Rear standard ride height springs

1K0511115BL

1K0511115BM

You can see them in the below lists. 1K0411105BD is number 6 out of 10 in the list of standard ride height front springs, and 1K0511115BL and 1K0511115BM, are number 9 and 10 in the list of standard ride height rear springs.
