xenon head light problem

Featured Replies

yesterday i noted one of my headlights was flickering then started turning off and back on regularly thought it may when i was going over a pot hole (has anybody noted how bad the roads are latterly) but it is going off and on for no apparent reason.

is this the first signs of the bulb being on its way out?

is it a common fault?

has anyone els had this problem?

cheers kev

doing a little reading on them it sounds like the bulb is on its way out,

had a look on line and there is lots of choice, make/ power/ price.

could you tell me the make i should be looking for?

what power?

and at what sort of price i should be paying, i don't want to go paying for over priced parts but i don't want to go buying cheap copies.

is it recommended to replace the two bulbs at the same time or is it ok to just replace the faulty one?

cheers kev!

OSRAM Xenarc are good, going rate here is around €75 per bulb. Replace both - HID performance degrades over time, so the one that's not yet dead will probably still be weak and should be replaced.

thanks for the link, am i right in thinking they would be a strait replacement like for like with the ones already fitted?

If your superb is a pre facelifted model then yes.

Take your old bulbs out, remove the plastic retainer clips off the old bulbs, put them on the new bulbs and clip the new bulbs in.

no mine is the face lift i think it has the water jets at the bottom of the head lights!

All cars with xenon headlights have headlight washers, and all superb have them at the bottom of the lights.

The Facelift was released around June 2013.

The facelift uses a different xenon bulb to the earlier model.

Just changed bulbs on my 63 plate facelift car, Osram D3S, £95 the pair from Amazon.  Unfortunately it's a major job on facelift cars, 2hrs work at local independent with bumper off so was just over 200 quid all in.  Still better than the almost 700 quid local Skoda stealer wanted to supply and install OE bulbs

thank you! now ordered from amazon i hope these are the right ones lol

the problem was every site i was looking for the bulbs give me deferent results i.e d1s , d2s then on other sites just said these bulb dose not fit my vehicle, the only thing i can think of is that my car is a late 2013 and i think one of the early facelift models?

and i now find out it is a pretty big job just to replace your headlight bulbs.

can the job be done through the inner wheel arch?

or dose the front bumper have to come off?

cheers kev

Sound like your car is almost identical to mine, registered November 13 a few months into facelift and the first 4x4 FL estate that I saw come onto the 2nd hand market when I was looking to purchase in January 14.  Yes, lot of websites give confusing information around this transition period but D1S are for pre-FL (and can easily be changed in situ by unscrewing covers on rear of each headlamp) and D3S are for FL (and are a pig to swap) so if you have FL the D3S will definitely fit.

I find the easiest way to spot the difference between Pre-FL and FL is the headlamp lenses and estate tailgate.  The Pre-FL headlamps have Superb logo embossed into the front lens:

Whereas FL cars have no such logo.

The tailgates on FL estates have a more angular design in keeping with modern Skoda family design like this:

Pre-FL are more rounded like this:

I have read somewhere that you can gain the necessary access through the inner wheel arch but when I suggested that to the indy doing the work he reckoned that it was easier to take whole bumper off for total ease of access rather than practicing your gynecology skills through the inner wheel arch.  Either way it's crazy to have to do anything like that when the bulbs aren't going to last the life of the car.  Mine hadn't failed but were changed as the output from the original bulbs had dropped off so much in 8 years + 110K miles it was like driving with a tealight balanced on each wing.  Had become simply dangerous in the middle of winter and certainly not "Simply Clever" for once.  New bulbs restored them to being the best headlights I'd expereince when I first got the car.

yea thanks mine is the face lift September 2013 so it will be one of the early ones!

i will see how much the indi garage i use are going to charge me for labour?

the thing that was worrying my was the drivers side head light started flickering i thought it was my eye playing trick night vision then it started turning off and back on it was then i realize it could be dangerous  if approaching a junction or what ever the car weighting to pull out may think i have flashed him out and pull out strait in front of me, hence the reason for pushing for info , so i can get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Similar here, I thought it was my eyes going with age, was only when I drove a courtesy car (base spec octavia with halogen headlamps) did I appreciate just how bad my headlamps had gotten and that there was nothing (new at least) wrong with my eyes.

The VW indy I've recently started using charges £45+VAT per hour which I think isn't too bad, still hurts but was 200 quid well spent in total to get headlamps sorted

update not good picked my car up from garage today after having the dsg thermostat replaced and the new d3s xenon's fitted couldn't rely check the head lights until later when dark the temp seems to be behaving its self back to normal, problem is the 2x new d3s xenon's bulbs are all over the place at first the bulb faliar light on the dash came on soon as the head light where turned on so turned them off and on a couple of time then the warning light stayed off but the lights are next to useless it was only when i took it on a unlighted road i.e country lane i realised the normal dipped beam was on the floor right in front of the bonnet of the car then  put high beam on and they where next to useless dull as hell.

i will be going back to the garage tomorrow  to get it sorted, could any of you lads or lasses tell me what has probably happened i.e is it something they have done or not done?

will it be just a case of relining them up properly or am i just wishful thinking?

any help advice would be appreciated before morning if poss, so i have some understanding of what they start telling me if you know what i mean lol

Was it just the bulb fail indicator or did you also get a specific error message on Maxi Dot display as well?  It could just be that the baseline alignment needs setting (after which the self leveling does the necessary to trim up or down) or could be something in the self leveling system.  As always, first port of call is a scan to see what fault codes have been thrown up.  Best of luck (and think positive, at least DSG 'stat sorted, mine was done about 18 months ago, amazing the improvement in fuel consumption on long runs, they're obviously designed to run at 90C for a reason!)

just an update, i got a very helpful member of the forum to plug his vcds in and it found the fault to be the swivel module left mechanical failure.

so i told the mechanic of the results we had using vcds he said it sounds like something could be out of place or something and to leave it with him and he will sort it out for me i got a phone call hour or so later saying all done come and pick it up. the mechanic came out to have a quick word with me and apologised for any inconvenience and told me he had trapped a wire when replacing and that was stopping the swivel module from moving freely so he freed the wire put it where it should be and job done.

so headlights and dsg gear box thermostat all done.

hopefully this will be the end of the jobs on my superb for a while i have spent a fare bit on her over the last month or so,

(cambelt, tensioner and pully)

(water pump)

(dsg oil and filter)

(front and rear diffs)

(haldex oil and filter)

(and just the headlight bulbs and dsg thermostat )

so fingers crossed she will behave her self for a bit lol

thanks for all the help and advice much appreciated

kev!
