Misfire/hesitation on acceleration 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

2006 Combi with 260000km.Has been a superbly reliable car. Few problems- just maintenance and replacement of parts of brakes and suspension. Reluctantly have decided to update and Sod's law has struck. As indicated in the heading, the engine seems to stutter under forceful acceleration. Is it worth putting an additive in the fuel and giving it a good run on the autoroute? Similarly, thoughts on what the problem might be and solutions welcomed. Thanks.

No. Don't put additives in it. Most, if not all, are just "snake oil".

I'd say check pipework such as vacuum hoses.

Edited because I could. Okay?

Usual questions to allow a better understanding of issue:-

1/ How long has this been happening, and has it been a gradually occurring issue (getting worse over time) or did it start "overnight".

2/ Has this co-insided with any maintenance, especially changing fuel filter.

3/ "Reluctantly have decided to update" - please clarify what you are suggesting, have you modified something or are you looking to sell.

4/ If you want to try an additive, what type are you looking at - injector cleaner etc - look what is available locally and carry out online reviews. There are no reasons to not use one as products from reputable companies should have no detrimental effect and may provide a resolution.

5/ Most importantly, have you done a scan with a VW group specific scanner which may report issues.

6/ Any chance of dodgy fuel.

,Hi Keith

I noticed something a few weeks ago specifically when climbing up a very steep hill.

No recent maintenance.

Changing to a newer car.

No scan.

Not dodgy fuel.

One thing that might be relevant is that I've recently moved from a fairly isolated location where every need meant a minimum 40km round trip. Now I can be in the nearby town in a couple of minutes. Just wondering if such short trips have clogged something up. I'm going to get some Wyn's additive and give it a blast. For the sake of a few euros, I think it's worth a go. The old dear has little residual value so I don't want to rack up garage bills.

I think this might be of some use to you. The solution was the MAF.
