Is it SATNAV or not

Featured Replies

Now I may have this totally wrong but I thought Bolero was radio and a few other things only, no satnav.

For that I thought one had to get Columbus. Been looking at ads and in one vehicle they show a map on unit marked Bolero so I am at a loss.

Am I missing something obvious. I like cars with built in satnav not ones where you have to connect phones up, I am not into all that malarkey.

Bolero system can have Android Auto where you can get satnav from your phone on the infotainment screen.

Hi

Ah see that is the setup I least want.  I often forget my phone when going in the car that does not help things. Plus I like a satnav to be a satnav and nothing else.

Have you an old phone you can leave in the car just as the satnav.

The directions come through the car speakers.

It works well for me, and you can update the maps easily.

Yes but do I not need a mobile signa1 for it to work. That ia a great problem because lots of areas  where I live the mobile signal is non existant.

I am 100% with you there Bogart, the solution for me was a cheap Chinese head unit with shatnav, the only downside for most is an upside for me in that it will not work with the standard Skoda Bluetooth module, it has its own shonky one built in but as I only carry a dumbphone and do not want to be making or recieving calls when driving it does everything I could want.

As my old phone is 2004 slightly older than the 2007 one which I use (both bulletproof Nokia dumbphones) that would not work for me but I have a question, would the "old phone" not need to have a simcard and contract or PAYG to work or will the shatnav work without a network or data connection?

Not if you use Google maps (which I do on my iPhone using CarPlay), because it has the option to download maps while on WiFi at home.

The only thing you lose without a mobile signal is the latest traffic data, but that will download when mobile coverage is restored.

I have downloaded maps covering England south of Manchester, which covers all of my current trips - when we go on holiday to Scotland later in the year I'll download maps for the rest of England & Scotland then.

My question also. One must need a connection to get mobile maps whereas a satnav stand alone unit is well a satnav unit not needing connection to any paid service.

So are you saying, hope I am correct, is I download maps onto the phone from as you say home internet and when out and about do not need to be connected via a mobile signal just have the phone switched on and somehow connected to the

radio/display.

Correct, provided the in car infotainment system supports CarPlay (if you have an iPhone) or Android Auto (if you have an Android phone) so the maps can be seen on the car screen.

I used to live in North Devon where many of the roads I used regularly had zero mobile coverage and by downloading maps onto the Google maps app on my iPhone I had maps 100% of the time - Apple maps does not have the ability to download maps so was pretty useless in that area (and also when on holiday in the mountains of Maine in the US where mobile coverage was virtually non-existent).

Hi

Right think have got my head around it. So good to go if it has CarPlay, have made a note of that.

If I am going away to a different country I will download the map of where I am going before.

I have then used my phone with local maps in hire cars without needing a data connection / costs.

Don't forget that if you download the map just before you go it will also be ( almost ) up to date.

I used to use a tablet with a 9 inch screen as well, before I had a car with Android Auto.

This is all free. no sim card needed, no mobile data needed.

Thanks, AG Falco

Which I think has answered my question.
