Reversing - hit brakes hard

Featured Replies

2.0tsi DSG 2017

Reversing into a parking bay, solid tone came faster than I thought it would, so I smashed the brakes on. Thought I'd maybe hit the rear.

I'm sure the brake pedal went down further and something made, what I think was, a gear slipping noise. I put it in N quickly.

I checked the rear, no sign of damage.

Does the gearbox release or something in reverse, if you brake really hard and fast?

If you did drive up to a wall and leave it in R, would it just keep trying to drive, or would just slip the clutch, or do something else?

Or do I need to try and replicate it, as there's a potential issue?

Or did you trigger the ABS...?

It could have, I was only doing 5/7mph, but I guess it could have started pumping.

If you heard a horrifying GGNNNRRRR noise and the car came to an abrupt stop, you activated 'manoeuvre braking' , where at low speeds the car will brake itself to stop you bumping into things. The reason the brake pedal 'went down further' is because it braked just before you did, so you'll have felt virtually no pedal resistance.

It's a horrible noise, that I assume is the ABS pump, not gears being mashed.

All normal and nothing to worry about.

Edit - in the manual it's called "Automatic Emergency Braking"

"If the system detects a collision risk when travelling forwards or reversing at a speed up to 8 km/h, there is an automatic emergency braking to reduce the impact consequences.

Disable / Enable

The brake function can be enabled / disabled in the Infotainment in the menu Parking and manoeuvring » page 215. "

This is exactly what happened.

I get nervous with this DSG box, I don't want big bills haha.

Cheers Kenai. I tried a Google search, but just came up with brake pads making the noise.

A similar thing happened to me not long after i bought my car.

I was reversing up to a barrier and was roughly 6 foot away from it when all of a sudden the brakes slammed on with the tones going mad. To say i crapped myself was an understatement as i didnt know the system existed. (Much to the amusement of my mate who has the same in his Passat and experienced similar before)

Anyway i got out of the car to find a weed that was growing out of a gap in the concrete that was exactly the height of and perfectly in line with one of the rear sensors! With the weed being so thin the sensor didn't pick it up until it was a few inches away i guess!?
