Why can’t you open the bonnet whilst the door is closed and, has anyone modified the lever to allow you to do so?

It is probably a safety feature so that the bonnet cannot be released whilst the car is being driven.

it probably is a safety feature, but never really heard of many accidents when the bonnet has come open. 
plus, awkward on the passenger side too.

 

I thought it was a security 'feature' to stop the bonnet being able to be opened if the doors were deadlocked.

This subject has been covered before. The handle is flexible enough to pull it sideways to clear the speaker.

Because Skoda didn't move the bonnet lever on RHD cars - on a LHD car that door can be opened using the emergency key and you can open the bonnet to charge the battery, but on RHD cars it's the other door that you open with the emergency key.

I'm not sure i'd say it's "meant to be" flexible enough, as in being designed to be used like that - it often may be flexible enough, but i wouldn't fancy trying it in cold weather for example.
