Octavia Mk IV VRS Front Assist - DANGEROUS BEHAVIOR

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive had a VRS Estate for just about a year now with about six returns to the dealer for a number of reasons (Heater, Fan Noise, Sat Nav issues) but most importantly is the problem with the Front Assist system applying the emergency braking for no reason what so ever. I have been driving at 40mph on a straight road with no obstacles or potential risk to the car and suddenly the alarm goes off and the brakes go on. I have taken it back to the dealer and they did a software update to rectify the problem but its come back. Quite frankly this is a very dangerous system. I have now turned it off completely before I have an accident. Anyone else suffering from this?

Take a look in the Octavia 4 forum, and you'll see several owners have reported problems with Front Assist.

Thanks petrol dave, I'll have a look.

@Gussyfishfood Looks like an admin has moved your post.

Front Assist has always been a bit over sensitive for me, with two different mark 3 Octavia’s and now a mark 4 too.

Current car often comes up with warnings telling me that Front Assist isn’t fully working. First Octavia managed a few automatic emergency stops when cars in front suddenly braked instead of using their indicators. Not that there was any real danger but the car jumped in first! In both the mark 3 Octavia’s I would get random warnings flashing up on windy roads as Front Assist detected oncoming cars on the other side of the road. Not a reliable system all in all…

The basic concept is flawed IMHO.

The radar just looks straight forward even when you are approaching a bend, so when a car comes round that bend it thinks you're driving straight at that car - which you know you're not as you can see the approaching bend! If they integrated the radar with the GPS and the maps they could make it better...

... or with the Lane Assist systems.

Mine on the Mk4 was overly sensitive when I first got it, but after a few updates it's been fine, well it has for the last 6 months.

On many country roads there are no white lines for the Lane Assist system to detect and work, so I would say - AND with the Lane Assist systems.

I’ve had this happen several times at 70mph on an open clear motorway. It’s just one of many many issues I have with my iV vRS.

I have spoken to the dealers many times. The last thing I was told was software updates to fix issues with “assist” systems were low priority as they don’t affect the main functionality of the vehicle.

Wow, are they serious? This seriously affects the safety, someone might hit you from the back if you suddenly brake for no apparent reason…

Exactly.  I’ve been through the ringer with this car.
Gave up a perfectly functioning Superb Sportline for this car.

I’ve just seen on another thread there may be a fix fir the assist systems. Hopefully it includes this issue.

same here had a 191 Superb Sportline 190bhp why oh why did i try this yolk of a car a nightmare it is just had the latest update to software today we will see how it behaves

Looks good , mechanically drives good , not bad MPG but is an evil B#stard coded to kill you.

LAURA CYBERDYNE INDUSTRIES T 300

I think Skynet were involved in the software coding. It freezes your screen , so u cant defrost the windows ( it laughs at you).

It will pretend to not remember last settings and put your CLIMA on AC auto at 22 degs ( I get pleasure from your reactions HA HA )

It call the emergency services at whim ( Laughing at you POP POP)

Overtake a car on the outside lane under ACC , HA HA i wont let you!!!

Oh who are you , you must be a new user HA HA let me wind you up.

Want to go somewhere you dont know how to get to : Ha ha i'll place you somewhere miles from where you really are!!!

"Is that a dangerous obstacle ahead" , no its not but ill apply the brakes anyway HA HA .

"Your indicators have a fault contact the dealer, your emergency services SOS have a fault contact your dealer. Front assist is not available , contact your dealer.

YOU ARE DEAD , CONTACT YOUR DEALER.

Very well said! I would add - "You want to start the car? Well, I won't let you because I have discharged the 12v battery and that means I won't even let you open the doors! HA BLOODY HA!"
